Mandatory Masks for K-12 Students

August 28, 2020

Dear parents/guardians,

I am writing to you today to provide you with an update about mandatory masks in our Catholic schools. On August 27, the ALCDSB Board of Trustees held a Special Board meeting and approved a motion for mandatory masks for students in Kindergarten – Grade 3.

Here is the motion:

Whereas unity with coterminous boards has been a guiding principle for the ALCDSB school reopening plan;

Whereas public health indicates that masks should be strongly recommended for students in K to 3 grades;

Be it resolved that the ALCDSB school reopening plan extend mandatory masks to include Kindergarten to Grade Three in school and on buses, subject to medical and religious exemptions.

This motion was made to further promote the health and safety of all students.

Please note that we recognize this may be difficult for our youngest learners and our focus will be on education around masks.

There will be no disciplinary action for students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 having difficulty complying with this direction.

As you are aware, the Ministry of Education does require mandatory masks for all students in Grade 4-12. This includes on the school bus, in classrooms and in common areas such as hallways.

All staff, visitors and essential workers will be wearing masks at school.

For more information on ALCDSB's Return to School Plan, including other Health and Safety measures, please read through the plan here.

Thank you,

David Desantis

Director of Education
