Connecting students with government

November 08, 2016

image 3.jpgOn Thursday, Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis hosted teachers Teressa Krentz and Sean Simpson, along with their Grade 10 Civics class from St. Theresa  Catholic Secondary School, at parliament hill. The group were given a tour of parliament and had the opportunity to meet and speak with the U.S. secretary of homeland security, Jeh Charles Thompson, as well as the U.S. ambassador to Canada, Bruce Heyman. To cap off the visit, Ellis arranged a surprise meeting between the students and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “What better way to inspire and foster a connection between young people and the government than by hosting them at parliament hill and allowing them the opportunity to forge a personal connection to our nation’s leaders and political system,” stated Ellis. “I firmly believe that, as a politician, it is my responsibility to help inspire an interest in politics with young people and foster that interest by engaging them in a meaningful way on an ongoing basis.”
