​A dynamic, growing sector, the hospitality and tourism industries include opportunities in accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation and entertainment, and travel services. Jobs in this sector tend to provide plenty of opportunities for advancement, widely transferable skills, and ongoing training.  

Some future career paths

​For Hospitality & Tourism majors, possible career paths include these occupation groupings: ​
  • ​Apprenticeship – baker; butcher, meat cutter, or fishmonger; chef; conference and event planner; cook. 
  • College –  accommodation service manager; conference and event planner; food service supervisor; occupations in advertising, marketing or public relations; restaurant and food service manager; travel counsellor.   
  • University – biologist or related scientist; dietician or nutritionist; inspector in public and environmental health or occupational health and safety; occupations in advertising, marketing, or public relations.  
  • Entry level workplace – airline ticket and service agent; executive housekeeper; food and beverage server; food counter attendant, kitchen helper, or related support occupation; ground and water transport ticket agent, cargo service representative, or related clerk;  hotel front desk clerk; customer and information services representative; service support; purser or flight attendant; receptionist; sales and account representative; theatre, fashion, exhibit, or other creative designer.

Program requirements

​In the Hospitality & Tourism major, students will take 8 credits in grade 11 and 12: ​
  • ​4 major credits that provide sector-focused knowledge and skills 
  • 1 English credit (Grade 12) 
  • 1 Math credit (Grade 11) 
  • 1 Business Studies or Science credit (Grade 11 or 12) 
  • 2 Co-operative Education credits to apply, refine, and extend your sector knowledge and skills 
Additionally, students will have opportunities for
  • Experiential learning, career exploration and reach-ahead activities in Hospitality & Tourism 
  • Certifications and training programs, including: 
    • ​4 compulsory certifications: Standard First Aid, CPR Level C with AED, WHMIS (generic), and Customer Service 
    • 2 additional certifications or training programs 
    • A sector-partnered contextualized learning experience, such as math literacy in the Hospitality & Tourism industry 
Hospitality & Tourism major credits are delivered at the ALCDSB Technology Learning Centre at the Sir James Whitney campus.
