Due to growing demand, Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School (RND) has created additional English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for secondary students.

“We are excited to welcome students from all over the world to our community,' said Nicholas Woolley, Principal of RND. “With this increase in students, we saw a need to add more ESL sources to best support these students."

Last semester RND offered three ESL courses for students, who are primarily newcomers to Kingston and Multi-Language Learners (MLL). The courses are designed to help students develop academic and conversational English, across all strands: reading, writing, speaking and listening. These classes also provide opportunities to learn about Canada and life in Ontario schools, as well as other culturally relevant practices.

“The support I have received in the way of ESL instruction at RND has made my transition to a Canadian High School a success story," said Silva, whose first languages are Arabic and Kurdish.

“I am so happy with the ESL program at RND, the teachers are helpful and supportive, and I have made lasting friendships with my classmates," said Vladyslav, whose first language is Ukrainian.

“In addition to our academic programming offered specifically for newcomers, the entire RND community has come together to support our newcomers," said Nicholas Woolley. “RND has hosted various multicultural festivals, events, meetings, potlucks, and clubs during school hours so that all students and staff can learn from each other."

Other activities have included prayers in multiple languages and morning music from around the world.

Regiopolis-Nore Dame Catholic High School is the oldest English Catholic High School in Canada.
