Groundbreaking Ceremony at St. Joseph Catholic School

March 31, 2022

St. Joseph Groundbreaking guests

On Thursday, March 31, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) was pleased to welcome municipal and provincial delegate representatives to St. Joseph Catholic School to acknowledge and celebrate the breaking of ground at the school site, located at 405 Bridge Street East.

In February 2022, ALCDSB received approval to award the tender for the construction of a $19.8-million addition to St. Joseph Catholic School.

The addition to St. Joseph Catholic School will accommodate:

  • 481 elementary student spaces
  • 20 learning studios
  • Six learning commons
  • Gathering stairs
  • Breakout spaces
  • Two dedicated EarlyOn rooms
  • Licensed childcare, including three dedicated rooms and an increased number of childcare spaces to 49.

While this work is being completed, the St. Joseph Catholic School community is being temporarily housed at the Sir Winston Churchill Public School site, located at 301 MacDonald Avenue.

ALCDSB has worked closely with Colbourne & Kembel, an architectural design team who specialize in school facilities. Construction is underway, a completion date for the project is yet to be finalized, progress updates will be provided to the school community throughout the construction process.

St. Joseph Catholic School opened in December 1953. The school was constructed to alleviate a growing population at St. Michael Catholic School on Church Street. The original school consisted of six rooms; however, throughout St. Joseph Catholic School's history, many additions have been made to the school's structure due to increasing enrolment. In 1962 a second floor was added and in 1968 a gymnasium and kindergarten classrooms were added. Another large addition was added to the school in 2004.

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board serves approximately 12,000 students, employs over 1,400 full-time equivalent staff and covers a geographical area of more than 16,000 square kilometers.

The ALCDSB builds faith-filled learning communities where each member is loved, inspired, and successful.
