ALCDSB in partnership with Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH), Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington Public Health (KFL&A PH), Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, and Youth Diversion are hosting monthly online education series to empower parents and caregivers.

Social Media, Technology + Mental Health

Join practicing Family Physician, and mom to two young kids, Dr. Alison Yeung, MD, CCFP, for an important discussion about the relationship between social media/technology and mental health.

Dr. Yeung believes digital technology can present both challenges and opportunities for young people.  

In this session the following topics will be explored:

  • general trends in adolescent mental health over the past two decades
  • societal factors that have contributed to screen overuse
  • how Big Tech is contributing to child online safety harms
  • identifying which kids are at higher risk of problematic screen use
  • signs and symptoms of social media and/or video game overuse/addiction
  • how to approach a child asking for a smartphone
  • when to introduce a smartphone/access to social media
  • how to implement healthy boundaries and model healthy use of technology at home
