Funding for the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board Elementary Summer Learning Program (SLP) has been approved for Summer 2021. The Summer Learning Program aims to provide students opportunities to minimize learning loss and face social and economic challenges that affect their learning. Another focus of this year's SLP is to bridge gaps in learning created by the current health crisis.

Our schedule is subject to change based on the needs of our students.
The program will take place virtually and feature synchronized learning or teaching. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our Summer Learning Program will be entirely online. There is no onsite programming available for 2021. The SLP will be using Brightspace/D2L ePortfolio and Microsoft Teams to deliver content. This year our program will focus on the development of basic literacy skills for students in grades SK-3. For students in grades 4-8, our program will focus on strengthening skills in mathematics. We're pleased to announce that we'll have a grade 1/2 classroom taught in French this year.
Parents interested in having their child participate in the program will be asked to support their child each day by logging into the learning platform. It is expected that parents/guardians will be available throughout our program July 5 - 23rd from 9:00 - 2:30 p.m. to help support the educators by ensuring that their children are on task.
Students engaged in the program should have access to technology with a video camera such as an iPad, laptop or desktop computer with access to a reliable internet connection that will support live interaction. If you don't have a reliable device such as an iPad, laptop, or desktop computer with a video camera and microphone, indicate this on the registration page, and we'll provide one for your child to use for the duration of the program.
All programs are subject to enrollment. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Your child will be placed in the current grade that you specify on the survey. The Summer Learning Program will feature two special education resource teachers to support specialized programs.
For all of our programs to have the greatest impact on our students, we would ask that parent(s)/guardian(s) agree to have their child attend for the program's entire duration. If for any reason, parent(s)/guardian(s) decide to withdraw their child from a program, they are asked to inform their child's summer program teacher so that that spot can be designated to another child.
Our program will strive to provide high-quality, engaging literacy and numeracy instruction and a healthy living component to support both the Board and Ministry's initiative in building students' knowledge and skills in mathematics and literacy. We'll focus our teacher's attention on delivering programming that builds on fundamental mathematics concepts and skills, specifically, expectations in the Number strand and expectations related to number properties in the Algebra strand. Students will be exposed to and will use more sophisticated strategies beginning with manipulatives, representations and models. In Language, our program will build independence in reading and writing through the Gradual Release of Responsibility (Modelled, Shared, Guided and Independent). Teachers will integrate the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework: Multiple Means of Engagement, Representation, and Action and Expression in all learning.
All programs are subject to enrollment with a minimum of 15 students. The Summer Learning Program will focus on both literacy and numeracy and features two special education resource teachers to support specialized programs. There will be classes offered from Grade SK through 8.
Expectations for Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and Students
To accommodate the needs of our learners, there is an expectation that students will need a parent/guardian or older sibling to assist them throughout the program for tasks that might including logging them into the learning platform each morning, monitoring the daily schedule to ensure students return to the virtual classroom after breaks and independent activities, posting materials and ensuring that they are engaging properly with educators and other students.
Parent(s)/Guardian(s)/Student Training Sessions
Our Summer Learning Program will be delivered through Brightspace's Learning Management System and utilize Microsoft Teams for our Virtual classroom and ePortfolio. Brightspace's Virtual classroom will allow us to host group instructional times to facilitate real-time conversations and synchronized teaching between teachers, students and parents. Staff will be able to hold live chats, share their desktops, and interact while role-playing activities and use the whiteboard feature to help build understanding.
To ensure that learning opportunities are maximized, parents, guardians, and students should be proficient in learning tools to engage and participate throughout the program effectively. Parents and students will be asked to attend one of the hour-long orientation sessions on either Wednesday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. or Friday, June 25th at 1:00 p.m. Learning sessions will be recorded so they can be played back at a later date for reference.
Before June 22nd, you'll receive an email regarding the information above outlining how to participate in these sessions.
There is no cost for our Summer Learning Program
We encourage our parent(s), guardian(s) and students to have open and robust dialogue throughout the program to meet students' needs. Your child's teacher will contact you before our program begins on July 5th.
There will be opportunities for parents and guardians to speak with the educators each day during the last half hour of the program as they'll work to provide strategies that can be used at home to further support reinforcement of concepts taught. Upon the conclusion of the program, educators will provide a brief synopsis of the program and some individualized comments for students who were engaged in the program. Educators will provide strategies that can be used to support students.
Families registering for our Summer Learning Program should be committed to being engaged in the program each day.

Registration is on a first-come first-served basis.
Programs are subject to enrollment and may not be offered if insufficient numbers are available to make the program viable.
There are currently 30 spots per grade or two classes of each grade grades SK through 8. Classes will be removed from the form once they have reached their capacity.
Upon submitting this registration, you'll receive an email confirming your child's registration. This email is confirmation of your child's enrollment.
For grade 8 students entering secondary school in September 2021
Course Dates: June 28 – July 23, 2021
Students moving from grade 8 into grade 9 will have the opportunity to enroll in a Reach Ahead Course (Careers/Civics) it will be taught in English or French and will be offered online through a combination of both online synchronous (live teaching online) and asynchronous (independent learning) instruction. The Careers/Civics class is a mandatory credit for all secondary students.
These courses are the “normal" 110 hours delivered over 4 weeks.
The expectation is that students will spend about 5.5 hours per day on their course work.
Reach Ahead Course are appropriate for students who are strong independent learners and are motivated to engage in asynchronous learning.
Synchronous instruction will take place between 8:30 and 9:30 each day. During the remaining hours students would be expected to work on their own.
The courses are teacher-supported and enable students to obtain a full credit towards their high school diploma. It is expected that students be online for the synchronous portion of the course. Students will need access to a computer device and reliable internet throughout the day. prior to June 18th to make arrangements to borrow a device.

Students can only enroll in one Reach Ahead course. Students must register before Friday, June 18th.
Minimum course enrolment must be reached for courses to run.
