June is Pride Month

June 01, 2023

TW - PRIDE 2023.pngThroughout the course of this year, we have committed to living out our Board pastoral theme “Formed in the Faith" in our daily words and actions. During the month of June, we in Catholic Education, recognize both The Sacred Heart of Jesus and Pride Month concurrently.

As such, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board has a beautiful opportunity to celebrate diversity, equity, inclusion, and compassionate love for all with distinctively Catholic language and a faith-based perspective.

Our mission, our daily work, is to proclaim love. God is Love. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is precisely the image that expresses our mission, it is the image of the infinite and merciful love which the heavenly Father has poured out upon the world through his Son.

The goal of all we do in Catholic Education should be to accompany others as they encounter this love. Only this love, the love of the Heart of Christ, can transform the human heart and bring true peace to the world.

Pride flag and ALCDSB building.

The Pride flag is an iconic symbol of the 2SLGBTQQIA community. It aims to celebrate inclusivity, diversity, unity, and love. By teaching young people about the origin of the flag and the importance of every colour of the rainbow, we encourage awareness, kindness, acceptance for all and infinite love.

In addition to the traditional rainbow colours, there are five arrow-shaped lines that intersect with the original six-line rainbow. This Progress Pride flag is meant to represent diversity and inclusion within the 2SLGBTQQIA community.

The arrow colours, black and brown represent black, Indigenous and people of colour and the light blue, light pink and white represent the transgender community. This addition was added in 2018 to move towards a more tolerant and intersectional community. By displaying the flag and having these conversations we communicate solidarity and acknowledge that all families are centered around love. We also acknowledge the importance of students and families seeing visual representations of themselves in our Catholic schools.

We are beyond blessed to have families, students, and staff who identify as 2SLGBTQQIA in our schools and in our communities. It is important for all members of the ALCDSB to know and feel that they are welcomed, loved, and successful as they authentically are, made in the image and likeness of God.
