In 1989, Paul Halligan, younger brother of retired HC teacher Frank, and a basketball coach at Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School, established the Peter Carty Memorial to honour his close friend and classmate, Peter Carty who died from cancer at age 23, in 1984. Paul Halligan passed away from cancer in 1997 at age 34, a victim of the very disease that had taken his friend 13 years earlier. This event is a tribute to two men, who died too young, and is a time to remember all family and friends who fought, and fight, cancer; most importantly, they are events of hope and inspiration.
Much has been gained in research and treatment since the first Memorial; much more needs to be done, and we gather in sport and spirit to carry on the battle. To date, $370 000 has been raised for cancer research. As of last year, the monies raised are being distributed to members of our local community that are in the fight against cancer, with the hope to offset some of the expenses that they have to incur as a result of their lengthy battle.
