St. Joseph Catholic School Retrofit Update

November 21, 2018

ALCDSB logoIn January 2018 the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board received notice of significant capital funding to re-develop St. Joseph Catholic School in Belleville.

These renovations are anticipated to begin upon the conclusion of this current school year.   During this renovation, students and staff will temporality re-locate to the former Sir Winston Churchill Public School on MacDonald Street. This school was declared surplus by the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board in June 2014.

In efforts to achieve a robust, healthy, barrier-free learning environment, ALCDSB will be engaging with third party experts in preparation to welcome the St. Joseph Catholic School community in September 2019.  This includes air quality assessment, instillation of safe school resources and updates to the current physical facility.

These renovations will allow us to continue to provide excellence in Catholic education with an updated school environment for our students, staff and community.

The older, two –storey portion of the school will be demolished and new learning spaces will be created with some existing portions of the school remaining, e.g. newer classrooms, gymnasium.

A transition working group has been established to address all operational considerations, including transportation.

The contract for the design of the new school has been awarded to Colbourne & Kembel Architects Inc. of Kingston, Ontario. They have engaged Fielding Nair International, an architecture firm who specializes in school facilities, to support the design process.

In September, St. Joseph Catholic School welcomed the community together to help inform the design of the school. We value community input and are excited to welcome the community back for another meeting.
