Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School is Back On-stage with Disney’s High School Musical

May 31, 2022

2022-RND-DHSM_001.jpgKingston, ON – Regiopolis-Notre Dame (RND) Catholic High School is back on-stage after over a two-year-long COVID hiatus. The local Catholic high school are presenting Disney's High School Musical on June 2, 3 and 4.

For those familiar with the Original Disney Channel movie, the musical is a high-energy, large-scale production. With a cast of 34 students, 7 pit band members, 15 stage crew and 12 set designers, RND have made a big production about being back on stage.

Justine Lord, Musical Director and Head of the Arts Departments at RND feels there is nothing in life that recreates the feeling of being on stage – under the lights. “We're finally reconnecting with each other and with a live audience! There were so few opportunities for live performance these past few years, what makes this production different than any other, is that for many students, this will be their first on-stage experience", said Lord.

Volunteer Interim Director, Choreographer, community theatre enthusiast and RND Alumna, Sue Del Mei, is excited for students to be working in the theatre again. “Working on this production has been an exercise in renewal. So much joy, inspiration and gratification come from working on productions of this caliber. The students have worked tirelessly for weeks at a very rigorous pace, they've rehearsed they're parts, and they're ready!" Said Mei.

Known for their arts programming, Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School have been putting on Broadway-inspired musical and non-musical performances annually since 2005. Due to the pandemic, the last on-stage production at RND was Matilda, in December of 2019.

While school sports returned to a regular schedule in the Fall semester, David DeSantis, Director of Education for the ALCDSB notes the performing arts took longer to be reinstated. “We are absolutely overjoyed that the staff and students at Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School have gone forward with putting on this production. Our Catholic School Community is very excited to see this talented group of young people take the stage. In the ALCDSB, we believe in building faith-filled learning communities where each member is loved, inspired, and successful. We are both grateful and proud to see this mission in action," said DeSantis.

About the Production:
Disney Channel's smash hit movie musical comes to life on your stage! Troy, Gabriella and the students of East High must deal with issues of first love, friends and family while balancing their classes and extracurricular activities. It's the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical that is being led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the "status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well. Disney's High School Musical is fun for the whole family. Its large cast size and upbeat numbers make it the ideal show for middle and high school productions or the highlight of any community theatre's season!
