2021-22 Remote Learning Plan

Dear Families,

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board will continue offering families the opportunity for their children to learn remotely through virtual modes in the 2021-2022 school year. Ideally, all students would attend in-person learning during the 2021-2022 school year as experts state this is optimal for students' mental health and well-being. However, we recognize specific situations may warrant remote learning for some families. We understand this is a big decision for families, and want to provide as much information as possible to inform your choice.

Remote learning includes many of the same expectations present in our brick-and-mortar schools. There are specific minutes required for students participating in remote learning that are set by the Ministry of Education. Attendance for remote learning, like our brick-and-mortar schools is taken at natural transition points during the school day.

Elementary:  All students who chose elementary remote learning will remain in the remote school for the entire 2021-2022 school year. If you would like your child to attend the Remote Elementary School for the 2021-22 school year, please follow the Elementary Remote School Survey link. The survey will open on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at 8pm.

Enrolment in the Elementary Remote Learning Catholic School for the 2021-2022 school year must be declared by midnight on Monday, March 29th, 2021.

Students will be assigned a teacher with the remote school separate from their current home school. The French Immersion program will not be offered in Remote Learning. The Core French program will be offered in a limited capacity, due to staffing shortages.

Secondary: Secondary schools will survey families for requests to learn remotely before the end of the 2021 school year. Schools will need this information to identify course offerings; students/families must decide before June 2021 to attend remotely.

Students would remain with their home school and follow the regular day school schedule. If students choose the remote option, then all courses on the student's timetable will be delivered following the physical school's timetable. Students will not be permitted to attend in-person for any portion of the course. All curriculum and teacher contact will be provided to the student virtually. There will be designated permanent re-entry times scheduled (e.g., end of the semester) during the 2021-2022 school year.

In consultation with Public Health, the Ministry of Education may determine a regular day schedule is not four periods. It may follow a quadmester or octomester model based on the Ministry of Education and Public Health's recommendation.

If you have any further questions, please call the Elementary Remote Learning School at 613-544-4370 and ask to speak to Dan Finn – Principal, or Casey Wells – Vice Principal.

Yours in Catholic Education,

David DeSantis
