In-person Art Therapy-based Programs are being offered this summer by school mental health clinicians. Students entering Grades 4-6 and 7-9 are eligible to attend a weeklong program of psychoeducation workshops addressing mental health topics.
Students will learn strategies through art-based activities. Topics range from Self-Esteem, Social Skills, Feelings/Emotions and Anxiety and provide tangible skills that students can utilize in their everyday life.
These workshops focus on educating students (Tier 1) and do not provide therapeutic interventions.
Schools located on the east side of the ALCDSB will offer programming on the following dates:

Elementary Workshops (Grades 4-6)
Workshop 1
Topic: Self-Esteem
What: A workshop that will discuss and define self-esteem
Why: To help students to understand what healthy esteem looks like, how to achieve and maintain it. Students will be taught such skills through art-based activities and learn how to utilize their strengths that can assist them with their over well-being.

Workshop 2
Topic: Social Skills
What: This workshop will help teach students how to use skills to communicate and how to interact with one another
Why: With recent events such as the pandemic, students are noticeably struggling on how to communicate their needs with one another. This workshop will teach students how to interact with each other through nonverbal/verbal communication by utilizing art-based activities.
When:

Workshop 3
Topic: Feelings/Emotions
What: This workshop will educate students about the differences between feelings and emotions and how to appropriately express them.
Why: While feelings and emotions are often used interchangeably, the purpose of this workshop is to highlight the differences between the two. Students will be taught the different ranges of emotions by using art-based activities and how it impacts their behavior.

What: Students will learn how anxiety can help detect issues and what strategies to use to reduce anxious feelings
Why: Students have experienced significant anxiety throughout the pandemic. This workshop is intended to clarify what anxiety is and how to not let it interfere with our daily lives. Students will also learn how anxiety can help detect issues and how to approach them. Art-based activities will be used to aid students to learn practical skills.
When:
