Schools Move to Remote Learning Starting January 5, 2022

Dear Families,

As you may be aware, the Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, has made the decision to move all in-person learning to remote learning for 2 weeks, starting on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

This move has been made in response to the rapid increase in the COVID-19 variant, Omicron, and its high rate of transmission. You can read the Ministry's media release here:  https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/1001394/ontario-temporarily-moving-to-modified-step-two-of-the-roadmap-to-reopen

Government Screening Tool

Please continue to ensure you access and use the Government of Ontario's screener daily. Recognition of symptoms and knowing when to isolate and minimize mobility is vital to help slow the spread of the Omicron variant. Asynchronous Learning January 5 – 7, 2022

For this week, starting on January 5, all work will be asynchronous. Teachers will be posting asynchronous learning materials to your child's D2L page this week while schools prepare for the move to synchronous lessons next week.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's learning or require support in getting connected to the online classroom, please contact your child's school.

Survey

In my letter to families sent Friday, December 31st, it was noted that a survey would be sent out on January 7, 2022, regarding remote school learning starting in February.  Given Premier Ford's announcement today, distribution of this survey will be postponed.

Supports for Students

Learning for students with educational needs that cannot be met remotely will continue in-person with a start date to be determined and more information will be communicated through school Principals.

Families should monitor their children and contact their child's teacher or school Principal if you have concerns about their engagement in remote learning.

Please be reminded of the mental health resources available to students at school, including Chaplains, Youth Workers, and high school Social Workers. In addition, Kids Help Phone is available which offers 24/7 counselling and referral services across the province. To use this free resource, children can call 1-800-668-6868, text CONNECT to 686868, or visit https://kidshelpphone.ca/.  

School Mental Health Ontario also has several excellent resources for students, parents, and families on their website at www.smho-smso.ca. and child and youth mental health agencies across the province continue to provide services. 
 

Technology

Your child's school will be in touch regarding the need for technology.

Childcare Centres

Schools that provide Emergency Child Care will continue to provide access to their on-site childcare centres.

This is a challenging time for our Catholic learning communities, but I remain confident that through our collective efforts and commitment to following public health guidelines we can continue to build faith-filled learning communities where each member is loved, inspired and successful.
