June FAQ for parents/guardians

June 05, 2020

board logo.pngThroughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board has been committed to keeping parents/guardians up to date with information with regards to school closures, public health updates, learning from home, information from the Ministry of Education and more. The following are updates and information that we think will be helpful to parents/guardians at this time.

1.      When are students going back to school?

On Tuesday, May 19, 2020 Premier Doug Ford announced that students in Ontario would not be returning to school in June, 2020. We acknowledge that this news is disheartening for many, but the Ontario government has made this decision to protect the health and safety of all students and staff during the COVID-19 outbreak. This decision was made in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, health experts on the COVID-19 Command Table, and medical experts at the Hospital for Sick Children.

The Ontario government is also planning for the reopening of schools for the 2020/2021 school year and the gradual reopening of child care, subject to the continuing progress in trends of key public health indicators.

ALCDSB will continue to provide updates to parents/guardians over the summer months and post all updates on the board website – www.alcdsb.on.ca

2.      What is ALCDSB doing for Grade 8 graduation?

Due to group gathering restrictions, physical graduations will not take place.

In lieu of a physical graduation ceremony, all elementary schools with Grade 8 classes will be hosting graduation ceremonies virtually.

This decision was made as it was felt that this allowed our board to recognize the accomplishments of graduating students while maintaining the health and wellness of students, staff and families as our priority. A virtual graduation allows our board to follow guidelines as outlined by our local public health units and the Ministry of Education.

ALCDSB elementary schools will be reaching out to Grade 8 students and their families with more details on the virtual graduation ceremony. These ceremonies will go live and be held on the original graduation date.

3.      What is ALCDSB doing for Grade 12 graduation?

Due to group gathering restrictions, physical graduations will not take place in June. ALCDSB is committed to celebrating Grade 12 graduates in a different fashion this spring.

Although it may look different at each school, each of our five secondary schools will be celebrating our grade 12 graduates on their accomplishments.

ALCDSB continues to work in collaboration with our local public health units, the Ministry of Education and local municipalities to ensure that any celebrations held for

Grade 12 students will comply with all public health measures. This will ensure the safety of all students, staff and families.

Updates on a Grade 12 celebration will be shared through each secondary school.

4.      Can I still register my child for Kindergarten for Fall 2020/2021?

Registration for Kindergarten is still happening. Parents/guardians can complete a pre-registration form online. This process takes about 15 minutes. The school will receive this information and contact you for further details.

Click here to access the pre-registration form.

5.      When can my child get contents from their locker?

ALCDSB has been working in consultation with local public health units to create a way for students and/or parents/guardians to retrieve items from student lockers.

Access to all secondary schools will begin on June 12, 2020. Secondary schools will be contacting families with dates and times for retrieval of items from student lockers. Please be patient as this may take numerous days for our larger schools. Information will also be posted on school websites. ALCDSB has taken many precautions to ensure this process can be completed with the health and safety of students and staff at the forefront.

6.      When can my child get contents from their elementary classroom?

ALCDSB has been working in consultation with local public health units to create a way for students and/or parents/guardians to retrieve items from student classrooms.

Access to elementary schools will begin on June 18, 2020. Elementary schools will be contacting families with dates and times for retrieval of items. Please be patient as this may take numerous days for our larger schools.

Information will also be posted on school websites. ALCDSB has taken many precautions to ensure this process can be completed with the health and safety of students and staff at the forefront.

7.      Will my child be receiving a report card?

Yes, all ALCDSB students will receive a final report card in June.

  •  On March 31, 2020, the Ministry of Education released a memo stating the following: “For elementary students, teachers will use formative assessment approaches to gather evidence of how students are progressing in their learning. It is expected that teachers will provide feedback to their students on their progress."
  • Students grades/marks will be based on Term 2 work up to and including March 13, 2020.
  • Secondary students will receive a percentage grade based on their work up to and including March 13, 2020.
  • All work done by students in the context of emergency remote learning will be assessed formatively by educators. This means that educators will provide feedback about students' strengths, needs, and next steps, but will not assign letter grades or numerical marks for such assignments.
  • No students’ grades/marks will drop due to work assigned during the period of emergency remote learning. However, in the event that student work during this time demonstrates evidence of learning of a positive nature, a teacher may use his/her professional judgment to raise the student’s mark/grade (potentially adding comments from remote learning) from what it would have been had the report card been written on March 13.

All students will be receiving a final electronic report card on July 1, 2020.

8.      What about summer school?

9.      What about the technology that I received from the school? How do I give it back?

ALCDSB is asking that all grade 12 (graduating students) return their devices when classes are done in June. Secondary schools will reach out to students to provide more information. Also, any student leaving the Board is expected to return the device to their home school. All others can keep their devices until September at which time a decision will be made based on what the learning model looks like.

10. What about testing for COVID-19?

The Province has enhanced its testing for COVID-19 and people no longer need a referral to go to assessment centres across Ontario for testing. No Ontarian will be declined a test. Families are encouraged to visit an assessment centre if you: have at least one of the symptoms of COVID-19; do not have symptoms but are concerned you might have been exposed; do not have symptoms but think you are at risk through your employment (for example, if you are an essential or health care worker); would like to be tested.
