To Superintendent Smith-Dewey
Follow-up to my email sent to Bonnie Campbel regarding after-school programming.
Let me introduce myself: Luce Paradis, the Community Partnerships Liaison for Start2Finish; we are a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support throughout the school year to Canada's at risk children in over 60 cities, in the form of an after-school program which emphasizes both literacy and fitness.

This year's pandemic has had us pivoting to virtual and has also enabled us to extend our programming to many other schools and boards throughout Canada.

My hope is that our after-school programming opportunity can be shared within the schools of your school board.

Our programming could benefit specific students in your school (Gr.3 to Gr.6) by providing them with additional literacy and fitness activities.

The programming is designed by experts in pedagogy and fitness and integrates social-emotional learning as part of each lesson. Each session planned is meant to be engaging by being short, fun, interactive and balanced. Our volunteers are vetted, well supported through training and linked to a support coach with Start2Finish.

A student would need access to a phone, or another device (laptop, Chromebook) to be able to join.

There is no cost for students to join.

The spring session (virtual) runs from the week of April 5 to May 24.

I have attached documentation for your review (background of the programming and its virtual version: Brainworx!).

I am available to speak and/or meet virtually.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Dear Ms. Smith-Dewey,
How are you? Am not really sure if you will be the right person that can help me with my kids regarding the bullying incident happened to my daughter and son at St. Micheal's Catholic School(Belleville, Ontario) last March 23 and 25 involving one student in Gr. 2/3. I am not really sure if end of day routine mention by the principal Mr. Reitzel will be effective to protect my kids against this student. My kids teachers are all aware and well informed of the 1st email I sent them. However, 2nd incident happened again with the same person and only Mr. Reitzel mentioned to change the end of the day routine. Please kindly see attached emails of me and Mr. Reitzel regarding these incidents.

Good Day,

My name is Erica Edwards, the Outreach Manager for Afiwi Groove School in Ajax, Ontario. I am writing to introduce Afiwi Groove Educational African Dance and Drumming Programming to the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board.

For centuries, the cultures and celebrations of West African communities have been kept alive through the tradition of music, dance, and storytelling. At Afiwi Groove School we continue to keep these stories alive one move and one beat at a time. Afiwi Groove School is a nonprofit organization that recognizes the power of African music and dancing as a form of healing, connection, expression, and social change.

Our programs promote positive self-esteem, confidence, and an active lifestyle while educating and connecting participants to the arts and culture of the African Diaspora. Our dance and drum workshops are led by dynamic and talented performers with lived experience and expertise in the cultures of Africa and the places it has influenced. On stage, in the classroom, virtually, or in the community, we are dedicated to sharing and celebrating the unique contributions of African-rooted cultures.

Through rhythmic beats and movements, Afiwi Groove School connects children to another world full of sensory experiences that awaken their imagination. Afiwi Groove School’s dance and drum programs boost the energy level in any room and instill an appreciation for self-expression and the power of self-discovery.

All our programs are developed and geared towards 3 different age categories.

❖ Kindergarten (JK/SK),

❖ Primary (Grades 1-3) & Junior (Grades 4-6)

❖ Intermediate (Grades 7-8)

Please see the attached pdf for Programming Details.  If you require any further information, feel free to contact me at outreach@afiwigroove.com

Hello Ms. Smith-Dewey.  My name is Dennis Scherer and I live in Guelph Ontario.  I would like to introduce you to my book "The Shadow and the Candle".  I am contacting you in hope that you may assist me in promoting my book to the schools in the UCDSB region.  I am hoping through the School Board system that you may forward this information to all the school librarians.  To all who read this I am asking you to help support Yellow Moon Mouse Children's Campaign in support of sick children and fighting childhood cancer by purchasing a copy of my book for your school library.  My family is a recipient of the gracious donation made to them by the Guelph Children's Wish Fund and we understand first hand the need to support such organizations in order for them to help others and with your support this can be accomplished.  The Yellow Moon Mouse Children's Campaign also supports RMHCS in Hamilton, OPACC, Childcan, Sick Kids, and several other organizations helping and supporting sick children and fighting childhood cancer.  100% of the net profits from the sale of my book goes directly to the various charities. I cannot express enough the relief families with sick children receive with the generous donations from these organizations and as well the welcoming relief to know Ronald McDonald House is there to support so many families.  Costs to families can be overwhelming at all levels when going through their journey with their child and by purchasing a copy of "The Shadow and the Candle"  you will be doing a great service to these organizations.  Please visit Yellow Moon Mouse Children's Campaign on Facebook.  I thank you for your time and consideration.  Please have a safe and great day.

My book is available through Library Bound in Waterloo Ont. and Library Service Centre in Kitchener Ont.

"The Shadow and the Candle” came about after our grandson Logan at the age of four developed leukemia in 2018.
My wife Joyce and I spent endless days and nights with our grandsons Logan (now seven) and Blake (now nine) helping the family through this trying time. A regular habit with the boys was storytelling. However, instead of reading stories all the time, we created and made up our own. Logan asked me one day if we could put one of his favourites into a book.  This will be the first of fifteen stories I have created through this process.

I began researching local Illustrators and Editors and I have partnered with Robin Baird Lewis to complete this book.   Robin, after reading my script assured me that this could be a children's book.  After several meetings and discussions, I decided to pursue this in order to support sick kids and fight childhood cancer.  Robin may be best known in the Children's Genre' of books with her worldwide book "Red Is Best" (Illustrator). Robin completed the editing for "The Shadow and the Candle" and completed all the Illustrations as well. Robin has created distinctively styled images for over 25 titles, published variously by Annick Press, OUP, Random House, Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Western Psychology Press, and for self published authors using General Store Publishing Co, Wishima Press and Friesen Press. For further information you can visit her website robinbairdlewis.com

The Shadow & the Candle, written by Dennis Scherer, illustrations by Robin Baird Lewis (Yellow Moon Mouse Children’s Campaign, 2020) Ages 6-9

When Dennis Scherer’s grandson was diagnosed with leukemia, Scherer decided to take the stories that he would make up for his grandchildren and turn them into a series of books that could raise money to fight childhood cancer and support kids who are sick. For Cancer Awareness Month, I’d like to highlight this advanced picture book whose proceeds go entirely to the fundraiser Yellow Moon Mouse Children’s Campaign.

This is the tale of two brothers who want to explore the abandoned house at the end of their street when they hear rumours of its shadowy ghost and a candle that floats around on its own. Instead of discouraging their curiosity, their mother becomes a part of the adventure as they set out together to find out what lies within the abandoned house. Kids can easily relate to both being frightened of the unknown and excited to discover the truth.

My four and six year old were thoroughly engaged in this story. It was just spooky enough for them to pull their blankets up tight but it also included humourous moments that made them laugh aloud. Illustrations are by Robin Baird Lewis of Red is Best fame and subsequent reads allow for more observant readers to find hints that Lewis has created within the illustrations as to the outcome of the story. The length of the text could have easily lent itself to a beginner chapter book; however, the large text and images also make this a great story for older reluctant readers. Order details are available on the Yellow Moon Mouse Children’s Campaign Facebook page and through many independent booksellers.

Hi
I'm not sure if you are the right person to contact. If not are you able to forward to the person that I should send it to. We had my son enrolled in homeschooling not online learning before lockdown happened back in last March 2020 for September with Limestone school board. We are wanting to switch him to your school board for homeschooling for senior kindergarten in September. He is turning 5 in August. We want him to go to a Catholic school once he starts going so I thought it would be best to get him switched to your school board now ahead of time. Is there a form I need to fill out to enroll him in homeschooling. My daughter just recently switched to Holy Cross from Ndss and just loves it and can't wait to back.
Karen Paquettekpaquette@nation.on.ca
Hello,

Please find attached a letter inviting your school board to participate in exploring the Ottawa & St. Lawrence Rivers Virtual Field Trip (VFT) created by South Nation Conservation.

We are hopeful that your board will see merit in the VFT and help in sharing it out among your schools and teachers or alternatively identify an appropriate school board lead that would be able to support this initiative this month.

Please find a recorded teacher webinar walkthrough/tutorial at https://youtu.be/0h6TROZGHGs.

Please do not hesitate to connect if you have any questions or comments.

Best,
Karen
Danielle Hogandaniellendan@yahoo.ca
Good morning,
I hope this email finds you well.  I am reaching out to you in regards to prospective graduation plans for the senior class of 2021.  I am a parent of a student at Regiopolis Notre Dame Highschool in Kingston.
My daughter is a strong student acedemically and has been involved in her school community over the past years with sports and with the band.  To say the loss she has felt over the past two years would be an understatement.  Your senior years of highschool have so many milestones and rights of passage if you will, all of these were taken from these students due to covid.  missing half of grade 11 year and close to 3/4 of their grade 12 year has really impacted their overall experience and opportunity to grown as students and young adults.  most of these milestones or events cannot be regained or recreated- they are simply gone.  Many of these things we all have fond memories of our own highschool experience.
I am asking you to please consider allowing schools to plan for a fall convocation ceremony for these students.  It is predicted by Fall 2021 all things will be open and functioning as before pandemic.  These students would be able to have a ceremony, a celebration with their classmates, with their teachers, with their families.  Holding a ceremony as previously planned on the date of June 24 would be disappointing, disheartening and truly unfair to these students.  Even more so when we all know it is possible to host this later.  I know in my highschool days we always had graduation ceremonies in fall.  It was so nice to see everyone again- people came home and reconnected and shared the excitement of what they were off to do.
Please consider the students when finalizing plans- they deserve a proper graduation.  They have already sacrificed so much with this pandemic- please don't take the dream of graduation, walking across that stage and really celebrating all they have accomplished from them.  If any class deserves a celebration and recognition it is our senior class of 2021.
Respectively yours,
Danielle Hogan

Good evening.
I am reaching out to you in follow up to my earlier email this week in regards to graduation ceremony for the class of 2021. In light of the recent reopening stages plan it appears a graduation ceremony of any caliber will be possible in June 24 (date previously quoted to schools and students). I am asking you to please give serious consideration to a fall convocation.
Please think of the students and families- what they have already lost in their secondary school career. These are all things that contribute to a memorable and satisfying school experience.they deserve the recognition they have worked so hard for. They have all overcome so many challenges and adjusted to so much change.   I look forward to your email response.
Thank you.

Hello Carey,

My name is Suzanne Merriam and I am the Senior Manager, Education at the Shaw Festival. Nice to e-meet you.

As we head into the final month of the school year, the Shaw Festival would like to share with you a virtual Role Drama lesson plan we developed for grades 4-6.  This fun and engaging virtual role-play experience has been a huge hit with our local school boards and directly targets curriculum expectations for Drama, as well as including cross-curricular links to Language, Mathematics, and Social Studies.

Feedback from a Grade 4 teacher:
My class loved this activity. It was the best in school field trip I have participated in. This was an amazing experience for my students. The elements were so dramatic my students forgot it wasn’t real. They were so engaged and excited about the journey. It was wonderful to see their imaginations take over. And that is what drama is all about. It was brilliant.

Attached please find a copy of the Teacher’s Guide which can also be found on our website: https://www.shawfest.com/beyond-the-stage/teachers/#stage-door-program

Please share this program with your Junior Division teachers.

FYI - We are in the process of creating a role-drama program for Primary level students which explores and celebrates theatre and the community, and an Intermediate level virtual, interactive escape room program based on the Shaw Festival.  We will pass on these links as they become available.

Happy to respond to any questions you might have or requests for more information.
Cheers,
Suzanne

Dear Director and Trustees,
I am writing this letter to express my disappointment and sadness regarding your recent decision to not hold in person graduations.  Given that the province is opening up and the Premier himself stated that graduations would happen for everyone, not just graduates, this is a surprising choice.  While graduations for all seem frivolous, not letting the students at then end of their elementary or secondary education have their moments seems to me cruel.  Further, I do not accept that it is not feasible to organize these events.  I myself am an educator and I have organized many graduations, including being part of a socially distant graduation last school year.  I also do not believe that schools have not already made plans for such events already.
I sincerely hope you will reverse your decision and I will await your response to convince me and the many graduating students, that this is a decision made in their best interests.
Sincerely,
Jane Scanlan Price

Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic Shool Board:
The Honorable  Superintendentof Education Carey Smith Dewey:
Greeting !
My name is Zhuo Chen , my wife name is Zhanghong An,we have a son name is Joshua Muen Chen who was born in 2012 ,he is Canadian Citizen and will be 9 years old for grade 4 at September,he can speak fluently English,a little bit  French and basic Mandarin, now he study  at W.J Holsgrove PS.

We want to register my son Joshua for the new school year at your school board at any of available Catholic School in Kingston, like apply the Mother Teresa Catholic School, that's why we send you this email. Sorry for our English not good enough ,but we believe you understand what our mean.

Let we introduce ourself first :
Our family immigrated from China at 2002,I became a Christian at 2006 in Canada ,my wife became a Christian at 2010 in China.
My son Joshua came to Canada at 2014,since that,he stay at Church with us,so he know GOD Jehovah and Jesus,he has his children Bible and children pastor at Mississauga Church.

We go to worship at Mississauga Chinese Christian Church and then worship at  Kingston Chinese Alliance Church after we move to Kingston at Dec.2019.

Unfortunately,we had not been to Church over one year since COVID-19 happened.

I have to let you know Joshua is the gift from the GOD!
Before he was born,me and my wife were not young people anymore, but we truse GOD will listen to our pray,so we read  the LUKE 1st chapter everyday and enjoy it,we beg together "because of the tender mercy of our GOD ,by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven. "(LUCK 1:79)...
Then as you know,GOD heard our pray and gave us Joshua as the best gift because of his mercy !

Because of our family condition, the problem is I am a long haul  truck driver, I always stay at outside, couldn't give Joshua enough time, and our English are not good enough to teach Joshua the full understanding Bible in English...

And any of information about my family and all of the register procedures, please don't hesitate to let us know,we will do everything according to your standards.

Hello,

As you are aware, the pandemic has changed graduation for students at school. To change that, Aurora Roca, a grade 12 graduating student from Innisdale Secondary School in Barrie, has written and produced a special graduation song with a producer from LA for all graduates this year.

This song is one way Aurora would like to give back to schools and students. To accompany the song she also made a music video which can be added to the graduation ceremony (virtual or not) that will be occurring.

We welcome any feedback and would be honoured if you chose to use her song as her gift to the graduating class of 2021.

Also, please feel free to share this song and video with other schools, staff, and people you know so they can also enjoy her gift and hopefully make grad a little better this year.

It would be wonderful if the students, staff, and community could support Aurora by either signing up for her email list which notifies when she has released a new song and/or check out her song on Spotify or YouTube.

The song and video are currently available on YouTube under Aurora Roca at:

All links are available on her website and there is a notification signup for new releases:

Thank you for all your hard work in supporting students throughout the pandemic and have a wonderful graduation!

Good afternoon, Carey.

As we wrap up the end of a challenging school year, Binogi would like to invite you to Part 1 of a webinar series on June 17th at 3 pm (AST). In this webinar, we will explore why Binogi is a relevant resource to bridge learning for students and teachers engaged in virtual, face to face, and hybrid learning models during the pandemic and beyond. Our guest experts, Dr. Jim Cummins, Dr. Emmanuelle Le-Pichon Vortsman, and Dr. Alexandre Cavalcante will share the research behind our multilingual learning platform.

Binogi is a unique online resource that allows students to study and learn in their language of choice. The platform provides animated lessons that are curriculum based and localised. A key goal for Binogi is to support access to education for all students.

Binogi has been used by schools in Sweden, Germany, Finland, Tanzania, Kenya, and now we are hoping to provide Canadian students and teachers with our innovative learning tool. Our approach has always been to have research support our development; consequently, we have research partners in every country in which we operate. Our ongoing relationship with researchers and educators at OISE helps to ensure that we are constantly improving our process.

Currently, the Canadian platform offers math and science content for students in grades 6 to 9. Our content is available in a variety of languages including English, Arabic, Dari, Somali, and Tigrinya. All translations are completed by language experts around the world to ensure the accurate translation and use of content specific vocabulary.

Hi,
My name is Gloria Ferri.  I am currently teaching within the York Catholic District School Board here in Aurora, Ontario.I have been teaching since 2003 within this board at varying levels.  I began at the elementary level and taught there from 2003-2012.  In 2012 I made the move into the secondary panel where I began teaching Religious Education and English.  I have since moved into the Health and Physical Education Department as of 2016.I have taken on a life philosophy of a lifelong learner.  I have taken numerous AQ courses as well as outside interest courses to keep current and to ensure that I have as much to offer the students and fellow staff as possible.I initiated and was successfully awarded the Health and Wellness SHSM program through the Ministry of Education for my school (Cardinal Carter Catholic High School) while I was also the liaison for the Business SHSM program; no small feat.  I single handedly recruited local businesses, educational resources and community support to ensure that students were able to have as successful an opportunity as possible in their chosen field.I am seriously contemplating a move to Bancroft and I would like to explore the option of remaining within the Catholic teaching system.  I just do not know where to start.

Dear Carey Smith-Dewey,

I am a parent of three students at St. Patrick Catholic School in Harrowsmith. I am contacting you to voice my concerns over the large class sizes this year in the upper grades at this school. My daughter's grade 5/6 class currently has 33 students- which is far too high anytime, especially during COVID. This is unfair both to the teacher and the students, it does not allow for effective learning or social distancing. I have spoken to the school principal, Mr. Minutillo, who explained that many classes are at these large sizes and they are waiting to hear from the board whether they will be granted another teacher. I would like to advocate for our children to have another teacher at the school, to make the student teacher ratio more manageable for several classes within the school, and improve the educational experiences of our children in this transition back to in school learning.

Look forward to hearing back from you,
Emily Smith
Patricia OConnorpatriciao@keys.ca
Good afternoon Superintendent Smith-Dewey,

I am writing to you regarding my son Jack Ferguson's grade 8 class placement at OLOL.

I spoke with his new principal this morning and requested that Jack be switched from his current class (Mrs. Burns) into the other grade 8 class (Mr. Gervais).

I am making this request in support of Jack's social, emotional and mental health well being. Jack has been placed in a classroom with ZERO of his friends.

Normally, I would NOT make a request for a classroom change based on this. However, given that Cohorts are still in force, this will mean that Jack is 100% disconnected and isolated from any ability to socialize at school.

The only reason that Jack is even willing to go to school is to have the chance to hang out with his friends. He told me that he believes that the school just wants him to be "absolutely miserable all year!"

Mr. Sonomon stated that Jack needs to remain in the assigned classroom in order to support his identified EA needs. He also stated that children are resilient and that I need to trust that he has been placed properly.  I would like the board and Mr. Solomon to understand that I KNOW my child BEST.  Jack should not be socially isolated in the name of supporting his special learning needs. Grouping all of the special needs learners in one classroom is not true integration or individualized support.

We are more concerned about Jack's mental wellness than his academic success. It is well known and documented that at this point in adolescent development, social relationships are CRITICAL.

The type of isolation that Jack will experience due to COVID and cohort rules by far outweighs his need for EA support in the classroom.

Although I feel that he should be able to receive supports regardless of classroom placement, I know how understaffed our system is. We will forfeit our right to EA support in order for Jack to remain emotionally stable and well connected socially. This too is a highlighted need in his IEP.

Please connect with me as soon as you are able to facilitate his classroom switch as quickly as possible. This year will be vital for establishing future academic and social success and Jack's current class placement is not the best fit for either of these things.

I ask that you TRUST me as Jack's parent and support this switch to happen quickly.

With thanks,

Patricia and Jack

A Sustainable Return to School with ORCA!
Please note I would love to discuss with your President, Chef, Facilities Management or Sustainability Coordinator if this could be forwarded accordingly. Thank you!

I hope this note finds you well! As you look to open up campus for the fall semester, I want to introduce you to ORCA as a sustainable food waste solution, for a safe and healthy return to school in 2021!
As you may be aware, 22 million pounds of food are discarded from U.S. colleges every year, amounting to $26 million in lost monetary value. Unfortunately, studies show the average college student throws away 142 pounds of food every year, most of which is broken down into toxic liquids and gasses, while rotting in landfills across the country.
Here at ORCA, we have designed a smart solution to food waste! The ORCA works as a bottomless bin, that uses aerobic digestion to turn 100% of your food waste into a nutrient dense water, that travels through the existing sewer system and is recycled back into our environment. Check out this video from Salisbury University to understand how ORCA can benefit your campus https://youtu.be/CqV6Zp849UI
If this is something that you would like to discuss in more detail, I would love to connect anytime! Please don’t hesitate to reach out, and I wish you a safe and happy return to school.
All the best,
Ellie

Good morning Superintendent,

I just missed your call once again.

I am available right now or any time in between meetings today that you can squeeze me in.

It has been a very emotionally draining two days and I would really appreciate talking with you at your earliest convenience.

Jack did not go to school yesterday. I convinced him to go today but it was a REALLY tough sell!

I look forward to speaking with you.

I attempted to reach your secretary both yesterday and today but had to leave messages both times.

Thanks,

Patricia

Hi,

I got a call from St. Mary’s in Trenton Ontario asking about my sons asthma on the way to pick up my son Cayden Murray, was informed that he is struggling with the masks and heat and no air conditioning (why you wouldn’t  install these in the schools in summer knowing the heat is beyond me) In the school when he handed me his face covering the thing was soaked from moisture and sweat, I think it’s absolutely outrageous for teachers, principals, and the government to expect children to sit in heat with things covering their mouths or sit in them at all ever if they are at their desks they shouldn’t need them except maybe and that’s even pushing it for hallways. However snapping at them if they remove them for a bit which I have informed my son to do if needed. If they are each at their own desk 6 feet apart and using cleaning methods there should be NO need for these poor kids to have to wear these masks indoors esp with upgraded ventilation and no air conditioning. To me this is abuse to children that are potentially at no risk of sickness or severe sickness, from Covid but they are from wearing the masks prone to infections around the mouth and sickness from breathing in their own C02 and other toxins. It’s shameful school boards have gone along with this abuse to children and  not stood up for them!
I have attached an exemption letter for my son, he will Not be subjected to this torture any longer, and I will not risk his health from wearing a mask when he’s potentially at no risk or harm of Covid implications. I as his legal guardian and decision maker expect this to be followed without discrimination or segregation.
Also, if my son is told to put a mask on or he can’t leave the classroom at the end of the day again which it fell off when he was trying to put his shoes on because it broke, I will also take action against this, I was utterly shocked to hear this from not just Cayden but other students as well. I am Cayden’s legal guardian I am there to get my son at the end of the day, my son is to get outside at the time I am to get him, he’s not to be threatened, coerced or talked down to in-front of his class mates by his teacher or anyone else. I have obtained legal council if this happens again my son is NOT a hostage. My sons their to learn, not to have torture endured on him!
I will NOT consent to any Covid testing for him, or a vaccine I do NOT provide any type of informed consent for him when approved for his age group, nor is he allowed to take a vaccine for Covid providing the government or schools attempt to lower the age and let students make up there mind No teacher, principal, or anyone In the school or school board is allowed to Coerce Cayden in any means to get vaccinated or tested. I do have a lawyer on standby and will use any means possible to protect my son!
Please consider this and St. Mary’s  your notice of my actions and exemption for my son Cayden Murray!

Thank you
Ashley Murray.

Good morning Superintendent,

I have just spoken with Mr. Sonomon who has said that not only will Jack remain in his classroom but that also none of his peers will be moved into his classroom.

Jack is coming home unhappy every day. He does not have the communication skills to share his frustrations.  I believe that his continued social isolation in the classroom will not be good for his mental health.

Mr. Sonomon believes that he will be "FINE" where he is.

He did NOT come back to me with any form of resolution to this issue. I believe he has "DUG HIS HEELS IN" and is not actually acting in the best interest of my child.

He led on that Jack has conflict with more than one of his peers which is NOT correct!

I am beside myself and want OPTIONS other than just Mr. Sonomon saying that the school has made the right decision.

This needs a solution beyond what Mr. Sonomon has offered, which is to do nothing.

We all know that COVID protocols change quickly and that his access to his friends during breaks will not last.

Please connect with me today. I would like to know if I need to connect with the Director of Education and beyond!

Jack does NOT come home happy every day and he should NOT be required to be further stressed that the academic stresses he is already under!

Please reach out to me soon.

Thanks,

Patricia
