EOSSAA Champs02.2612 A dominating Panther squad set out early Friday morning to T.I.S.S for the EOSSAA Championships. Every player saw court time and helped out with the convincing round robin first place finish. With another medal in their sights, the RND Panthers took the Fellows Falcons in two straight sets to win the EOSSAA Junior Girls Title! Junior Girls Volleyball - KASSAA Champions 02.20.12 The Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers have regained their crown in junior girls volleyball. After losing in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association final last year, the Panthers bounced back for their fourth title-game win in the past five years on Monday at the Queen's Centre. The Panthers took the final two sets to beat Sydenham 3-1, exacting revenge on a Golden Eagles team that beat Regi by the same score in regular-season play on Dec. 15. “We were just more confident and polished,” Panthers coach Catherine Walsh said when asked to compare Monday to the December loss, Regi's lone defeat on the season. “We passed well, we served well, we did everything well.” Whenever Regi got into trouble, Panthers star Norah Lloyd-Ellis seemed to bail them out. When Sydenham narrowed a fourth-set deficit to 19-17 from 17-10, Lloyd-Ellis' kill got the Panthers back on track. Set scores were 25-21, 13-25, 25-14 and 25-20. “She's a huge momentum person for us,” Walsh said of Lloyd-Ellis. “She's always encouraging the girls and always staying positive.” The Golden Eagles battled hard throughout. They suffered a a very big blow when star setter Katie McNichols injured her wrist while going for the ball in the first set. With McNichols off, Regi recovered from a 15-10 hole in the opener. “We rely so heavily on her,” Eagles coach Bryan English said. “She's steady for us and controls the play. However, English wasn't using it as an excuse. “Regi played very well and deserved to win,” he said. McNichols did return to the game with a taped-up wrist, but was nowhere near 100%. Still, the Golden Eagles won the second set in convincing fashion on some great underhand serving by Celina Grey. But the Panthers took control in the third set, overcoming the game Eagles with excellent all-around play. Walsh said Panthers libero Bailey Robertson had her best game of the season. “We have a large team. We started with 18 and now we have 16,” Walsh said. “I've never seen a team mesh so well.” Regi advances to the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association triple-A championship on Friday in Brockville.
