Panthers headed to OFSAA
02.28.02
In a wild shootout at the RND Gym this afternoon the RND Varsity Boys Basketball team qualified for the OFSAA Provincial tournament in Ottawa with a 81-63 victory over the St. Josephs Panthers of Cornwall.
After opening the game with 9 straight points the RND Panthers were taken aback by the athletic squad from Cornwall who countered quickly to tie the contest. The game moved up and down the court at a frenetic pace witnessed by the very high 47-36 half-time score in favour of RND.
The Cornwall Panthers acted quickly in the third quarter to close the gap to six points. However the long term effects of the fast pace and continuous pressing in the game started to take it's toll. Several quick RND steal were turned into fast break points. A key St. Joe's post player fouled out late in the third quarter. A technical foul and a score on the following possession gave RND a rare 5 point play.
RND pulled away in the fourth frame when they connected on 5 three point shots. The many home crowd fans celebrated as the game ended and RND secured it's OFSAA bid.

Regi wears down understaffed Panthers

Local Sports - A couple of packs of two-legged Panthers squared off on the Regiopolis-Notre Dame hardcourt yesterday afternoon and, as with their four-legged jungle namesakes, the more populous pack prevailed.
A full complement of Regi Panthers took advantage of an understaffed St. Joseph's Panthers team to flatten the Cornwall cats 81-63 in the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association AAA basketball final. The victory propels the Kingston area titleholders into next week's Ontario championship tournament beginning Wednesday in Ottawa. "Our strategy was to run that team ragged," said Regi guard Ton Deir, who enjoyed his best game of the post-season with 22 points. "They didn't have a lot of bodies, so we knew if we kept running and pressing that they'd tire out eventually." Bryan McMillan, whose seven three-point buckets highlighted Regi's rout of Queen Elizabeth in Monday's high school varsity city final, retained the hot hand. The 17-year-old nailed five three-pointers yesterday, part of a team-best 26-point performance. In all, Regi drained eight three-pointers including a pair by Deir and one by Romain Landu. The latter said Regi obviously likes that long-distance feeling. "We have shootarounds 15 minutes before practice and after practice, and that's all we do is shoot threes," said Landu, who had seven assists in a well-rounded outing. "They practise nothing but [threes]," chuckled Regi coach Ed Kenney. "Even the centres practise shooting threes; which play a big part in our offence."
When St. Joseph's faxed Kenney a list of eligible players, the sum total stood out like a bulbous beak, said the Regi benchboss. "We knew coming in that they only had eight players, but we didn't know they'd be as athletic as they were.St. Joseph's played a strong game, but they wore down as the game progressed."
Things went from bad to worse for the short-handed Panther club. Starting centre Jordan Wheeler fouled out late in the third quarter and two teammates played the entire fourth period with four fouls apiece. "When their big guy fouled out in the third quarter, that put a lot of pressure on their No. 13," observed Kenney, referring to slick six-foot-two forward George Girgis, whose game-high 28 points included an impressive slam-dunk between two Regi defenders in the late going. Girgis acknowledged that the thin bench hurt his squad, though perhaps not nearly as much as the team's plethora of turnovers and missed chances. "A team with eight players that plays a team with 13 players is always going to have its work cut out. It's not that we're missing players; it's been that way all year.
"We were very impatient and we rushed far too many shots, but [Regi] also played very tough defence and penetrated very well on offence."
Added Cornwall coach Dave McCabe: "Our strong suit is defence, but we didn't have it going [yesterday]. Regi penetrates exceptionally well, gets the ball out and moves it around quite effectively. We usually give up less than 50 points &endash; not 81. Regi's defence just wore us out."

'Lights Out' for Raiders

By Patrick Kennedy

Tuesday, February 26, 2002 - 7:00:00 AM
Local Sports - This time there would be no Belarussian ending for the Queen Elizabeth Raiders. At last night's high school varsity basketball championship at packed Bartlett Gym, the unsung, unlikely finalist, who captured four of their last five league games and toppled two roundball giants to reach Bartlett, fell 76-41 to the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers.
"There was no way we were taking Q.E. lightly," confirmed Regi co-captain Tom Deir. "They beat two teams that we couldn't beat all year, so we had to be ready to go right from the start."
They were.
Ten seconds after tipoff, Bryan McMillan drew first blood for the victors, draining a long-range bucket for a lead Regi never relinquished.
The 17-year-old, dubbed "Lights Out" by teammates, didn't stop there. McMillan hit four more three-pointers before the half ended, none of which kissed the rim.
"That kid hitting those threes from the corner, he put on quite a show," conceded Q.E. coach Mike Shkimba, whose shooters, conversely, started the game a frigid 1-11 from the field.
Lights Out wasn't finished. With Regi ahead 40-18 at the break, McMillan started the second half by launching a perfect bomb from three feet beyond the arc &endash; and nothing but net. He hit his seventh three in the fourth quarter to finish a dazzling 7-9 from three-point land; a game-high 23 points overall.
"McMillan was unconscious," said Q.E.'s splendid guard Lucas Allen, who netted 17 points in a losing effort. "When you see one guy burying a team like that, it gets the entire team down. We never recovered."
Ironically, Regi coach Ed Kenney pointed out that McMillan "hadn't hit a shot in practice" the last three days.
"The big difference in Bryan this year is his chin never goes down," said Kenney. "If he misses a shot, he forgets about it and goes at it again. That wasn't always the case." McMillan agreed, citing support from teammates as inspiration. "When your teammates and coaches are encouraging you to shoot, it helps your confidence.
"When you get into a groove like I did," he added, "you just want the ball. It feels great."
Parrish Offer, as has been his wont throughout the post-season, turned in another dominating performance for the winners. He collected 16 points and 11 rebounds.
"Parrish saved his best basketball of the season for the playoffs," lauded McMillan. "He was our leader every game."
The victory ended an 11-year senior title drought for Regi, which hosts St. Joseph's of Cornwall on Thursday (2 p.m.) for the right to represent Eastern Ontario at the the provincial AAA tournament.
The Raiders were seeking their first varsity crown in 18 winters. A modest 4-5 during the regular campaign, Q.E. stunned the roundball ranks with back-to-back upsets of the top two playoff seeds. It disposed of the 8-1 Ernestown Eagles in quarter-final play, then flew past the formidable Frontenac Falcons (9-0) in last week's semifinal conquest &endash; the same day Belarus bumped off the Swedes in Olympic shinny.
As for next season, the Panthers are arguably a good bet to repeat. All five starters are back, and a deep Regi bench &endash; "the real key to our success," said Kenney &endash; loses just one player.

Varsity Boys Bounce Bayridge to Qualify for KASSAA Final

Panthers 59 Blazers 45 - At Regiopolis Notre Dame, 17 offensive rebounds helped power the Panthers to a semifinal decision over the Bayridge Blazers and a berth in Monday night's title tilt at Bartlett Gym. Parrish Offer's 19 points paced the victors, who led by four at halftime and by 13 following a 16-7 third quarter. The ball-hungry centre also pulled down 16 rebounds, seven of which followed off-target Regi shots. Bryan McMillan added a dozen points and Romain Landu 10.
"Bayridge is a bigger team but we're quicker, which really helps our rebounding," Offer explained. "Our little guys were jumping into openings under the basket and getting rebounds.
"We like to say that defensive rebounds come from hard work, but offensive rebounds come straight from the heart," added Offer. "We played this game with a lot of heart."
After a 14-11 first-quarter jump, the Blazers gradually wore down under the relentless Panther press and smart transition game. In periods 2 and 3, the turnover-prone visitors were outscored 32-16.
"That's where I think we lost it &endash; on turnovers," suggested Bayridge forward Joel Pettis, whose 10 points were two fewer than Adam Asquini's team-high total. "You can't keep turning the ball over to a team like Regi and expect not to pay.
"They're a lot faster team," Pettis added. "To have any chance, we had to play hard, consistent basketball for the entire 32 minutes. We didn't."
Regi pulled away early in the third quarter. Landu's three-point shot kick-started an 11-3 run.

Pre-season favourites ousted in first round 02.19.02

Local Sports - A season that started with much promise and optimism ended in convincing defeat for Kingston Collegiate's varsity basketball club.
|Yesterday at Regiopolis Notre Dame, the Blues' bid to salvage a mediocre regular season was buried &endash; the Blues along with it &endash; in a 55-42 quarter-final loss to the quick-paced Panther pack. Kingston, picked by several coaches in a pre-season poll as the team to topple this year, opened the campaign tight and never did unwind. It dropped three of its first four and finished 4-5.
Still ...
"We came in here believing we could beat Regi, but for the most part we ended up beating ourselves," commented KC guard Mark Wallen on a torrent of KC turnovers. "We didn't execute and we gave the ball away too many times." Three of those giveaways, in the waning minutes of the opening half, were pivotal. With the visitors nursing a three-point lead, Regi rumbled into the dressing room on a 10-0 run. Bryan McMillan, bed-ridden by the flu the past few days, showed no ill effects. He hit a game-high 19 points for the winners including a quartet of buckets from beyond the arc. During that decisive half-ending 10-point run, the smooth-shooting forward drained a field goal and back-to-back three-pointers.He subbed in three minutes into the second half and immediately knocked down a three, then another less than a minute later.
six offensive boards
The most potent Panther, however, was Parish Offer, who netted 15 points and collected a dozen rebounds, including six offensive boards.
Offer said a Panther practice is akin to a game in terms of raw intensity.
"We were hustling and diving for balls against KC, but we do that in practice, too," said the athletic centre. "We play hard and run hard all the time. "We like winning."
Added McMillan on his teammate: "Parish knew he was due for a huge game and [yesterday] he really stepped it up and made a lot of big plays." While neither team shot well from the foul line, KC's 11-for-24 performance hurt worse than Regi's equally dismal 5-for-11 showing.
The loss was a bitter pill for KC graduating forward Dom Conacher, an ex-Panther. "You wouldn't believe how much I really wanted to beat those guys. After playing [for Regi] for three seasons, it would have been nice way to go out. "The fact is we were not up to the challenge," added Conacher, who accumulated just four points. "They outran us, they're in better shape than us, they have two or three good shooters and they play amazing defence."
The Panthers were their usual tenacious selves on defence. They hounded Blues ball-handlers incessantly, pressure that oftentimes resulted in a turnover.
thievery
Indeed, during one 30-second span of thievery in quarter three, Regi guard Dave Keo recorded two steals and had a hand in a third. He converted one himself and dished off to a teammate for another basket that pushed the Panther lead to 13. The Blues, to the man, looked shell-shocked.
Panther desire and determination &endash; though not their shooting accuracy &endash; was never more evident than during two successive third-quarter possessions. The Panthers grabbed four straight offensive rebounds before converting, then hauled down three more boards on the next possession and came away empty.
KASSAA 8-2 Overall 15-5

Disappointing Result vs Ernestown
02.12.02
In a battle for second place the Eagles downed the Panthers 52-49 in a see-saw affair at RND.
RND was unable to exert the same amount of pressure that they had placed on earlier opponents while the Eagles dominated the the boards. Despite these setbacks the Panthers were executing well on offence and defensively had held the Eagles to only 20 points with 10 seconds left until half-time. Unfortunately an E.S.S. three pointer and a RND turnover that the Eagles turned into three more points cut the RND led to one point (27-26) at the break.
The two teams exchanged the lead several times in the second half. Again, late in the half the Panthers were victims of their own mental errors when they were indecisive when changing defense on an E.S.S. inbounds under the RND basket. The confusion lead to an old-fashion three point play which gave Ernestown the led with one minute to play and was the margin of victory 52-49.
The Panthers have five days to get some much needed rest and to regroup before battling the Blues of K.C.V.I. at home in KASSAA quarter-final action, Tuesday, February 19.
KASSAA 7-2 Overall 14-5

Convincing Victory in The Memorial
02.10.02
RND had a strategy for their game with Holy Cross that seemed to match with the strengths of the Panther squad; pressure the Crusaders at every step, substitute liberally, and work an effective offence based around the fast break.
With a full house on to watch the Panthers seemed nervous, as were their counterparts, in the opening half. The game lacked any real pace and produced few points of exciting moments. RND led 22-17.
However the pressure of the first half paid dividends in the second has the Panthers created numerous turnovers and caused H.C. to use several different strategies when advancing the ball up the court. This faster pace of play suited the Varsity Panthers as they racked up 38 points in the second half. Though the game was sealed with a couple of three point shots mid-way through the fourth quarter, the true deciding factor was the effort and pressure RND was able to exert on the Crusaders throughout the entire contest.
With the decisive 60-38 victory, RND finished the afternoon with a sweep on the Crusaders and Boys Basketball bragging rights until next year.
KASSAA Record 7-1 Overall 14-4

Scrambled Effort Produces Difficult Win
02.05.02
With only two wins to their credit the Loyalist Lancers the Panthers may have begun the game by taking the Lancers too lightly. Several times RND pulled ahead by a significant margin only to see L.C. "reel them in" with strong rebounding and timely outside shooting. Even with a 7 point lead at half-time the Panthers were clearly "back on their heels."
L.C. began the third quarter by closing the gap to only two points. The Panthers finally seemed to sense the urgency when their frustration with the game became evident. The RND work-effort increased markedly and the Panthers opened up a 12 point lead by the mid-way point of the fourth quarter. Continued success applying pressure in the L.C. backcourt forced the Lancers into bad shots, RND failed to execute effectively on offense in the final minutes and seemed relieved to simply "get out of L.C. with a win."(55-43)
The squad will need to polish their attack before tackling Holy Cross in the 13th annual Memorial Game on Sunday, February 10th. Though RND holds the overall lead in victories at the Memorial, H.C. has won the last three senior contests.

Panthers Bounce Back vs Bayridge
01.18.02
The Varsity Panthers rebounded from their first defeat of the season with a consistent, game long effort against the Bayridge Blazers at home last night.
RND used it's athleticism and overall team speed to its advantage by executing a game long full court press. The ability to frequently substitute fresh players into the game meant that the press was always applied at a high level of intensity.
RND opened a small lead at half-time, but stretched their advantage in third quarter with many easy hoops created by turnovers and steals.
This time good decision making and maintaining an aggressive approach on offense allowed the Panthers to pull away instead of sitting back and defending their advantage. RND must now wait through the examination period before their next KASSAA contest versus L.C.V.I.

"Victory is to be Celebrated, Defeat is to be Learned From" 01.09.02
The Varsity Panthers faced their biggest test of the year so far when they traveled to Frontenac to face the unbeaten Falcons. The game opened in promising fashion RND as they were able to convert several fastbreak opportunities into points and tackled a very balanced F.S.S. attack with good defensive pressure from baseline to baseline. RND's full court attack balanced the strong Falcon outside shooting as the half closed with a flurry with RND in the lead 32-28.
The Panthers may have had their strongest defensive quarter of the season holding the opposition to only 7 points in the third quarter allowing RND to stretch it's lead to 14 points opening the final frame.
The Falcons chipped away at the Panther lead which still stood at a healthy 8 points with 3 minutes to play. When F.S.S. moved away from their three quarter zone pressure to a full court man press RND looked to take advantage and score some easy fastbreak hoops on the press break. Instead some poor decision making resulted in a flurry of easy baskets by Frontenac from steals, turnovers and RND violations. Despite goion 5 for 6 from the foul line in the final 2 minutes the turnovers didn't allow RND any chance to play defense and the Falcons points piled up in a hurry. (29 in the fourth frame.) After a Frontenac three pointer dropped with 11 seconds left the Panthers were unable to counter with a basket to win. The 29 minutes of hard work and disciplined execution had been wasted and the Panthers were left to find lessons in an unnecessary loss and focus on the next task, Bayridge next Thursday.

Inner City Rivalry Continues
12.20.01 (jr)
Last night the K.C.V.I Blues hosted the Varsity boys Panthers basketball team. The Panthers were eager to prove that they were athletic enough to beat the Blues, who were chosen as pre-season league favourites. The Panthers played with full intensity and set the tempo for the game early on as the Panthers went into the half time break with a three point shot from "downtown" by Parrish Offer. RND tried to keep their intesity despite an injury in the second half. Regi prevailed and won the game led by high scorers Brad Quist with 17, and Parrish Offer with 15. The final score was 63-57.

Panthers Down Golden Hawks in Home Opener
12.19.01 (bm)
Last night the varsity boys basketball team improved their season record to 3-0, and their overall record to 7-3.  Once again The Panthers full court pressure clawed away at the enthusiasm of their opponents, leading the panthers with great deffense was Dave Keo and Chris Gencarelli.  The Hawks attempted to play a tough zone deffense on the panthers which enabled Regi to score 78 points.  Tommy Deir led all scorers with 18 points while Bryan McMillan folowed him with 17.  Coming strong off the bench was Kyle Haslam who took a charge and also added10 points.  Come out and support RND as the visit K.C.V.I. on Thursday, December 20.  GOOD LUCK!

Christmas Classic Tournament in Kingston
12.16.01 (bm)
This past weekend the RND Panthers participated in the 13th Annual Crusader Christmas Classic. The Varsity Boys opened the tournament against the two time defending AA OFSSAA champions Timmons High. The Panthers were down 23-19 at half and were looking to come out strong in the third quarter, led by their two captains Parrish Offer and Tommy Deir, Regi stayed close but couldn't close the gap as they lost the game 51-42. The next task was to win against Rick Hanson to put the Panthers on the top half of the tournament. The Varsity Boys came out on fire as they took a 10 point lead going into the second half. Keeping the full court trap on, RND was able to hold off The Storm 60-58. Regi then played in the quarter finals against the Richmond Hill Raiders, a win in this game would put the Panthers into the top four of the tournament. Regi came out very slow in the opening quarter as they went down 26-8. They then showed a great deal of heart as they started their come back going on a 22-6 run in the second quarter. Regi was down 2 points heading into the change room and felt very confident as they now had the momentum. The game came down to a final shot that taken by Tom Deir. The panthers being down by 3 needed a to make a shot in the dying seconds of the game. With only 3 seconds on the clock Tommy pulled up for the game tying shot, unfortunately his foot was on the line and the Panthers lost by a single point. Now trying to earn a victory in the B final the Panthers faced off against St. Thersa's Sec School of Belleville. Leading the Panthers to a 28 point victory were Bryan McMillan and Dave Keo who combined for 6 three point shots. The B final was between RND and South Carleton, The Panthers took this game easily winning 59-41, Leading the Panthers to this victory was the great coaching of Mr. Henry Mayer in the first half. The tournament was a great success for The Varsity Boys as they look forward to meeting Napanee and K.C.V.I. this week in their KASSAA regular season and look to improve to 4-0. GOOD LUCK!!!

The Varsity Boys Basketball team opened their season last night in Sharbot Lake. Despite the small gym and jet leg when they arrived, they were able to pull off an 11 point victory. Romain Landu led the teams offence with 12 points, while Parrish Offer followed up with 11 and 6 in the second quarter. The Panthers hard nosed full court trap forced a lot of turnovers which led to easy baskets. The final score of the game was 55-44 for Regi. The Panthers will be visiting the Q.E.C.V.I. Triple Overtime in Ogdensburg
11.30.01
It took a little extra, but the Varsity Panthers were able to overcome several deficits to capture the opening round game in the 17th Annual Ed Bush Memorial Tournament held in front of a large crowd at Ogdensburg Free Academy.
It was a see saw affair for most of the game, with RND trailing a good shooting Massena High School team by 2, 31-29 at half time. RND held the lead for much of the third quarter, but were caught on some defensive errors in the 4th quarter and found themselves down 8 points with 1:47 left to play. A furious rally ended with a steal with 12 seconds to play and a quick score to tie the game and send it into overtime. Utilizing their full team the Panthers began to tire their opponents, who began to experience some serious foul trouble.
Each of the first two overtime periods saw the teams with excellent opportunities to win. RND battled the entire game employing an aggressive full court defensive strategy that they were able to maintain through the extra 12 minutes of play.
The third and final overtime frame ended with some clutch foul shots brought about by hustle on the floor and boards. The final score was Regiopolis-Notre Dame 82 - Massena 79.
RND returns to vie for the tournament championship tomorrow/Saturday at 5:00 against either Carthage or Ogdensburg.
Championship Game
12.01.01
The Panthers matched up with a much taller Carthage Comets in the championship game of the 17th Annual Ed Bush Memorial Tournament at Ogdensburg Free Academy, in Ogdensburg New York.
From the opening tip RND dominated the Comets. Several Carthage turnovers were converted into RND layups. A strong fast-break was spurned on by an enthusiastic bench which help create defensive pressure in an up-tempo game. A one-time 15 point lead was trimmed to a still healthy 9 at half-time.
A confident Panther group stumbled to begin the second half as Carthage effectively controlled the pace of the game. RND was less effective on the boards which lead to Carthage points and kept the Panthers from getting out on the fast break. A switch in defensive strategy by the Comets frustrated the Panthers who failed in their offensive execution and were underprepared with only three days practice. The large lead was quickly erased and Carthage opened up a gap that stretched to as much as eight points. RND did threaten closing the gap to 4 with only 1 minute to play. However the heroics of Friday's qualifying game with Massena were not to be repeated as Carthage went 6 for 6 from the foul line to seal the match.
The Panthers will use the tournament as a very enjoyable learning experience as they prepare this week in antcipation for their KASSAA opening game on Tuesday, December 11 at the Sharbot Lake Panthers.
