Hurdling brothers hitting their stride
By
Claude Scilley
Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 07:00
http://www.thewhig.com/webapp/sitepages/content.asp?contentID=33732&catname=Local+News
Local News - It was a startling revelation for Walt Sepic,
one day not long ago, when Alex and Sonny Mercer, the
hurdling brothers from Battersea, arrived for practice.
"Sonny comes to me and says, 'You know what, Mr. Sepic? Alex
was hurdling yesterday from noon to 6 o'clock in the back
yard.' "I heard that and I said, 'Oh,' " said Sepic,
somewhat taken aback by the news. That's a long time to be
rehearsing anything, let alone something as demanding as the
hurdles. Sepic was suitably impressed. "You don't know these
things about these athletes, what they do at home," he said.
"To find out he was out there for several hours? To me 90
minutes is a good practice. Several hours? On his own? Then
you realize his level of involvement and commitment." It
should come as no surprise that the Mercer brothers are
bound to represent Regiopolis Notre Dame at the Ontario
Federation of School Athletic Associations championships
this week in St. Catharines. For Sonny, a second-year
junior, it will be a return to the meet where he finished
sixth last year. For Alex, a Grade 9 student, it will be his
debut on the provincial stage. For both, it will be the
result of a serious spring of preparation aided, in no small
part, by the set of home-made hurdles commissioned for the
pair by their father, John Mercer, at one time a standout
senior A hockey player with the Kingston Aces. "We practise
at home, in the back yard, on the driveway," Sonny said. "We
live out in the country, so there's not much good running
terrain, but it helps you work on your form." For hours at a
time? "I love to,"Alex said. "I do it as much as I can. Just
to go to OFSAA will be my reward." Sepic said that for
Sonny, this was a season of fine-tuning and strength
development. "Last year, technically he was good but his
speed between the hurdles wasn't as good. This year, it's
better." "I've been working on my power, exploding out of
the blocks really hard, and
trying to maintain it, keeping my speed throughout the
race," Sonny said. He said he overcame a poor start to
finish third at the east regional qualifying meet in Ottawa
Thursday, in a personal-best 15.31 seconds. "I came out of
the blocks pretty slow," he said. "I think I was in fourth
until about three-quarters of the way through and I got up
to third by the finish. It's some good momentum [for
OFSAA]. I felt quick. "My brother did well, too. That
got my spirits up a bit." Having his kid brother around has
been beneficial, Sonny said. "We kind of push each other.
Even though I'm two years older than he is, if he does well
it makes me feel better and I run well, too. "You feel proud
to see your sibling taking after you. He's actually doing
better than I did in Grade 9. In Grade 9, I didn't make
OFSAA. He did. I'm glad to see that." Alex went to OFSAA
last year as a spectator and was taken with the atmosphere
of the big meet. He took up hurdling this year for one
reason: "Sonny. I saw him do it, go to OFSAA for it. That
was kind of nice, so I wanted to do it. It looked fun." He
initially expected only to make it to EOSSA and he said it's
"awesome" to be going to the provincial championship meet.
"I ran a really good race" at the regional meet, he said.
"Faster steps between the hurdles, [and] my stride
going over was a lot better." Last year Sonny Mercer ran the
OFSAA final in 15.48 seconds, his best time until last week,
when he improved it by 17 one-hundredths of a second. "I'm
not quite sure what to expect," at OFSAA, Sonny said. "I've
seen some pretty fast times. I'm hoping to get into the 14's
for OFSAA." The improvement, Sonny said, has come partly
from approaching each race as a whole, instead of a series
of little races to get over each hurdle. "I got into that
mindset last year about this time and I've tried to do it
this whole year," he said. "If you're thinking of keeping
your speed going through, it makes the race a lot more
smooth." That would be music to the ears of coach Sepic. "I
say, 'Look at the finish line, don't think of the race as
sections of small races, one hurdle at a time,' " Sepic
said. "It's a sprint race. [To understand that]
helps them change their perspective, to understand they
deserve to be here, that they have the skill, they have the
talent, don't be overshadowed by others' abilities." It
helps with their confidence, Sepic said, and that's an
aspect where both athletes have come a long way. "Alex in
particular, as a first-year hurdler, to watch him from his
first practice back in March, I'm thinking, whoa, is he ever
polished," Sepic said. "He's actually become a hurdler.
Before, he was a bit of a jumper, a runner between the
hurdles. Now he's a hurdler. He's understood and he's felt
the speed between the hurdles. He's actually sprinting
through the race, which is nice, to give him the freedom to
apply the skill to hurdle. "They've both come up a fair
way." Sepic said it's gratifying to share those moments of
enlightenment with athletes. "Your heart flutters," he said.
"You watch them and it's like, 'You understand,' and to me
that's a bigger thing than a skill acquisition, the
awareness part of it
the concept, the integral
foundations of the event. "When you get really high and
technical, there are a lot of components [to
hurdling]. They're just scratching the surface, but when
they get into that surface you go, 'You've got it,' and you
watch a little grin, just a little smile and, you know, you
don't want to belabour it but it's such a pleasure to see
them come into that new level of awareness: Hurdling is no
longer a mystery. They understand it. "I really enjoy that
part of it. The technical thing, yeah, most people can do
the exercises, but to watch their mental awareness improve,
that's a real pleasure." To experience it with young
athletes like the Mercers makes it particularly special.
"They're outstanding individuals, human beings, young
gentlemen," Sepic said. "Perfect. Not a conceited bone in
their bodies. They're humble. "You'll find that with
[Sonny]. He's quite humble but he's a damn good
athlete."

Panthers Provide Top Performances at KASSAA
5.16.03
With the numerous personal best times, heights and
distances posted by the 66 RND track and field athletes on
Wednesday and Thursday the most impressive number from the
meet may be that 53 athletes or 80% of the RND team
qualified for the EOSSAA championship next Wednesday in
Ottawa.
RND's goal of individual excellence paid off as Garnet and
Gold captured more first place medals then any other KASSAA
school, 25 in total. Despite dropping the team competition
by a mere 13 points the Panthers racked up their points the
hard way, with top results in each event which resulted in
the huge number of Panthers headed to Ottawa for EOSSAA and
the most successful KASSAA track and field meet in school
history
Congratulations Panther athletes and
