Panthers Pounce on Gold

Championship Game - Panthers take OFSAA Gold 11.28.09
In a four set match in front of an electric crowd the RND Panthers showed true grit in a come for behind victory in the OFSAA AAA Boys Volleyball Championship game.
The Panthers faced a tough squad from Sir Winston Churchill in St. Catherines, who featured to of the best hitters of the tournament. RND came out flying in the first set winning most of the rallies. However the adrenaline may have caused some serves to go long and some passes off line as RND errors were the cause of the Panthers dropping their only set of the tournament.
The experienced CATS immediately rebounded in the next set, reeling off the first 5 points and dominating the net with several monster blocks on the Bulldog hitters. The Panthers quickly drew even winning the second set 25-12.
The Panthers again burst out to a lead in the pivotal third set only to see the Churchill group climb back to even late in the set. Leading 20-19 and with serve RND played it's best volleyball of the match, where several long rallies had the crowd on it's confidently closing out the third set 25-22.
With the goal in sight the Panthers stretched out another early lead in the fourth and final set. This time it was spectacular defence that saw Panthers flying all over saving big hits from the opposition and then cashing them into back-breaking points for the Garnet and Gold.
As the final ball hit the floor the players, coaches and fans exploded onto the court. The St. Mike's gym is RND's home away from home as the Volleyball program has sealed two OFSAA gold on the hardwood.
Too many congratulations for this web site as the RND contingent enjoyed the victory and the players received their medals.

Panthers Cop Provincial Gold
Taken from the Kingston Whig Standard

Patrick Kennedy

Earlier this decade Regiopolis-Notre Dame underwent an unofficial shift in varsity athletics, a gradual alteration unnoticed at first but one that soon transformed the Panthers into perennial powers in one particular sport.
Make no mistake -- volleyball is king at Regi, and today the Catholic cats are kings of triple-A volleyball in the province.
Again.
On Saturday night, the top-seeded Panthers copped their second Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations three-A title, beating the Bulldogs of Winston Churchill 3-1 in the final of the 20-team tournament in Stratford.
Curiously, the cats, winners of 59 straight matches heading into the final, were forced to claw The former paced the Panthers attack with 18 kills while the latter added a dozen.
One Justinich kill shot stood out and simultaneously inflated the cats' spirit while deflating the Bulldoggies. McKenna equated it to a clean open-ice hit in hockey.
"John was a beast out there," he said. "He had a couple of huge blocks but that big kill really got us going."
Added Sheahan, one of nine Regi seniors making their high school volleyball swansong: "When John ripped it, our whole bench just went crazy and the other bench was completely demoralized."
Though they won on the road, the Panthers enjoyed a distinct home-court feel. Approximately 100 fans, friends, family and faculty members journeyed to Stratford.
back against the second-seeded Bulldogs. The St. Catharines high school stunned Regi in the opening set, 25-18.
However, there was an upside to that upset.

"Losing that first set was the turning point in the match," noted Regi coach Mark McKenna, the former Queen's player who in his four years with Regi volleyball has directed the senior pumas to a quartet of OFSAA medals: silver, two bronze and now gold.
"We knew we hadn't played our best, especially with errors in serving," McKenna added. "We had something like five service errors in that first set and to their credit Winston Churchill capitalized and took it to us.
"That was our wake-up call.
"Every time this team has been pushed this year, the players have responded in a positive manner."
The Panthers, who entered OFSAA with a 73-3-3 overall record, breezed through the round-robin and deep into the medal round without losing a set, including a convincing sweep of arch-rival Chatham-Kent in Saturday's semifinal.
During a timeout following that opening-set setback to Winston Churchill, Regi assistant coach Pat Farrell told colleague McKenna the team was simply following a course blazed by the 2002 OFSAA champs -- the first Kingston high school team to garner triple-A provincial gold.
"Pat reminded everyone that Regi lost the opening set in the 2002 final, too," said McKenna. "That calmed us down."
Indeed, the cats rebounded with a dominant 25-12 victory in the second set before locking up the crown with set wins of 25-22 and 25-16.
Regi's power hitters, right side John Justinich and left side Peter Sheahan, had a field day in the final.
"It felt like a home game," explained Sheahan.
"It was probably even better than the KASSAA final, maybe not as many (fans) but better because of what was at stake."
Five years ago Farrell kick-started Cats volleyball, offering clinics and camps and competition for young players at Regi feeder schools.
"For some guys, setter Cameron Santoni for instance, this is the culmination of a lot of practice," Farrell said of the setter, who started with Cats in Grade 6.
"He and the others reaped the rewards this weekend."
Farrell also heaped praise on McKenna, calling him "one of the best coaches, if not the best, in Ontario.
"When Mark came to Regi, it gave us committed coaches in both junior and senior. In terms of continuity, he turned this into a program."
A program that today is tops in the province.

Saturday- Playoff Day at OFSAA 11.28.09

Sorry for the Delay - the "staff" of the RND Scoreboard were too busy watching Dave Rooney win the Vanier Cup to update the web site between games. WELL DONE ROONEY

Game #6 - Semi-Final: RND got off to a slow start versus the Golden Hawks of Chatham Kent with several unforced errors. The team traded points until Peter Sheahan served seven straight to push the Panthers out to a lead they would not surrender. RND played with controlled energy in getting to many balls and providing punishing hits on their way to a 25-15 win. The second set saw RND jump out to a commanding lead where RND then cruised to a 25-13 win, qualifying them for the Gold Medal Match versus Sir Winston Churchill of St. Catherines. The Panthers will return to the site of their 2002 Gold Medal win, at the gym at St. Mike's.

Game #5 - Quarter-Final: The Panthers got a late start at St. Mike's versus Anderson of Oshawa. The boys must have stored up their energy waiting to hit the court as they played nearly flawless volleyball in posting a straight set 25-8, 25-10 victory. The Panthers served very well and kept their composure through the long delay and any obstacles the group from Anderson offered. The win secured a medal, but the Panthers have their eyes on the medal colour of choice as they headed back to the Stratford Agriplex for the 3:30 semi-final showdown with cross province rival - Chatham Kent.

Friday - Preliminary Play at OFSAA 11.27.09

Highlight Pictures: Click Here - for pictures of the Panthers in action.

Game #4: The Panthers and their growing gang of fans headed back to the Stratford Agriplex for their final preliminary round contest versus Bishop Ryan of Hamilton (GHAC) The Celtics hung tough throughout the first set and were serving at 23 points. The Panthers dug down and overcame the deficit taking the set 25 - 23 and then used the energy to roll through the final set 25 - 9 to secure first place in their pool. The team is headed out to dinner and some well deserved rest before entering playoff action tomorrow. Stay tuned to the RND scoreboard for up to the minute, court side postings of results.
Game #3: The Panthers faced a young and athletic crew of Warriors from St. Mike's, with a large crowd of hometown fans banging drums and loudly cheering from the St. Mike's gym. The team traded points to begin with until the game reached 10 points. RND's experience began to take charge as the Panther then powered past St. Mike's to a 25-17 first set win. RND played in front of the St. Mike's crowd to start the second set and dropped the first 4 points. The Panthers quickly huddled, regrouped and played above their opponents securing a convincing 25-18 second. The Panthers had their best serving game of the tournament so far. The boys are currently resting in preparation for their final preliminary round game at 6:00.
Game #2:
A noon start versus Waterloo-Oxford saw RND again start with some shaky play. Behind by 4 early on RND turned the tide with several cross court kills from the left side. The serving picked up and the Panthers closed out the set 25-17.
The second set saw RND play the way an experienced OFSAA quality club should perform. Crisp passing and punishing hits pushed the Garnet and Gold to a momentum building 25-12 win. At 3:00 the Panthers will step onto the court at St.Michael's to face the homecourt, sixth seeded squad.
Game #1: The Panthers were on the floor at the Stratford Community Agriplex at 9:00 facing the COSSA rep. the Crestwood Mustangs of Peterborough. RND started slowly in the games opening minutes adjusting the big stage and very big room of the triple gym at the OFSAA site. A couple of big blocks got the Garnet and Gold rolling mid-way through the first set they started to pile on the consecutive points. The trend continued in the second with RND securing a comfortable 2-0 victory (25-12,25-12) Next up, a 12 noon match with Waterloo-Oxford (CWOSSA)

Thursday Night at OFSAA 11.26.09
Chris Saunders got a little extra sleep this evening as he was on stage with the hypnotist who performed at the OFSAA banquet. The Panther boys enjoyed the food and entertainment as they "unwound" in preparation for opening games tomorrow/Friday.
Keep checking back to the RND Scoreboard for game by game updates directly from courtside.

Gunning for Gold
Taken by Kingston Whig Standard
Posted 4 hours ago
Buttressed by an imposing season record of 73-3-3, the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers enter this weekend's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations triple-A boys volleyball championships as top banana -- No. 1 seed.
A feather in the cap for the CATS? Sure thing, but no more than that, cautioned their coach. Exiting as top banana is the trick.
"It's a nice accomplishment, a nice reflection on what we've managed to do up to this point in the season," noted Mark McKenna whose club rides a 52-match win streak into Stratford. "But it's just a number."
As recent evidence, he alluded to perennial contender Chatham-Kent. Last year's top seed placed fourth.
McKenna made it clear the Panthers are on a gold-mining expedition. "We're looking to win," he said firmly.
"In many ways this is the best squad we've had here," he added on the talented troupe that returned nine players from last year's OFSAA bronze medalist, including the entire starting lineup. "We're deep and very balanced."
In 2002 the Regi volleyballers became the first Kingston-area school to win OFSAA triple-A gold, one week before the Holy Cross Crusaders captured gold at the three-A girls basketball championships.
In McKenna's three seasons as coach, the seniors have won three county and regional titles and three OFSAA medals -- a silver in '07 sandwiched between bronze in '06 and '08.
Spearheading the CATS' attack is Cameron Santoni, among the best setters in the province and at six-foot-three one of the tallest.
"He has great hands," said McKenna. "He's fast, smart and for a setter pretty big, a real weapon at the net."
The team's enviable depth is one reason for the 79 matches to date.
"We know we have players on the bench who could start at other schools," said McKenna. "We play a lot of games just so we can give them quality playing time, which they need if they're to improve their game."
For those superstitious cats, there is a good omen, albeit one worth about as much as top billing come curtain time: St. Michael's Catholic Secondary School, host of this year's 20-team affair, also hosted the successful gold-mining trip of '02.

EOSSAA Report 11.18.09
Following their unprecedented success winning four KASSAA titles at Bartlett gym last Saturday the RND Panthers took their momentum into EOSSAA play attempting to capture a red ribbon for the Junior Panthers and a trip to OFSAA for the Senior Panther teams.
Senior Boys Volleyball: RND Wins EOSSAA Championship. RND won their 5th Consecutive EOSSAA Championship. In their opening match Regiopolis-Notre Dame squared off against KASSAA Finalist Holy Cross and defeated them 25-19, 25-12. Peter Sheahan led the Regi attack by registering 9 kills. Unfortunately for Holy Cross, 5th year setter Mike Teves badly sprained his ankle in the 2nd set to leave the Crusaders shorthanded on offence. Match two of the day saw RND play St. Joseph's Cornwall. RND got off to a sluggish start but managed to win the first set thanks to 6 kills from Pat Zalewski and 4 service aces from john Justinich. Andrew Zalewski brought the energy in the second set that lacked in the first. RND won the match 25-15, 25-5. In the play on to OFSAA match Holy Cross defeated St. Joseph's 2-0 (25-17, 28-26. In the EOSSAA final RND found their game to defeat Holy Cross for the 3rd time in five days 25-12, 25-10. Congratulations to the boys and best of luck at OFSAA in Stratford!

Dominance Continues For RND Volleyball
Taken from the Kingston Whig Standard

It was a reserved celebration for the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers senior boys volleyball team.
Sure, the players held out four fingers for photographers to signify the team's fourth consecutive Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship. Yes, there was some back-slapping and a few smiles.
But one could tell the Panthers want a whole lot more than a KASSAA title this year.
The perennially provincially contending Panthers notched a convincing 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-15) victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders at Bartlett Gym to complete a Regi sweep on championship Saturday (junior and senior boys volleyball, junior and senior girls basketball) at Queen's University's Bartlett Gym.
"They're phenomenal," Holy Cross coach Robert Manion said of the senior volleyball Panthers.
"They have a great coach (Mark McKenna), a phenomenal program and they're certainly deserving of the win."
Asked what he thought of the Panthers' chances if they advanced to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations triple-A championship, Manion said, "I would be surprised if they didn't (earn a) medal."
Considering the Panthers have done just that the past four years, there's no reason to think otherwise.
But the Panthers are looking for provincial gold for the first time since 2002 and the OFSAA championship just happens to be taking place in the 2002 host city this year -- Stratford.
"I've heard good vibes (about Stratford)," Regi veteran Peter Sheahan said with a smile.
While McKenna wants the Panthers to take a one-game-at-a- time approach, it has to be hard for the players not to look ahead.
The Panthers should breeze to victory at the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association tournament at Regi, which would send them back to OFSAA.
Sheahan feels this year's Panthers outfit is stronger than last year's third-place finishers at OFSAA. The entire starting lineup is back from last year.
But the Panthers aren't perfect.
"We made a ton of service errors," Sheahan said.
Fourteen to be exact.
"We played well, but our serving needs to get better," Sheahan added.
While the Crusaders' all-star trio of Jeff Davies, Mike Teves and Evan Van Zuylen fought hard to keep Holy Cross in the match, it was a one-sided contest.
The Crusaders did take a set off the Panthers in regular season play, but Regi has stepped up its game for the post-season.
"Our serving was a problem, but everything else was pretty good," McKenna said. "We were running on all cylinders."
Sheahan led the way with eight kills, while John Justinich had seven.
