A Return to the Steel City for OFSAA Silver 11.26.11

Regi Settles for Silver at OFSAA Volleyball
HAMILTON Ben Fisher for the Kingston Whig Standard
The Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers senior boys volleyball team fell just short of a third provincial title.
In a reverse result from last year's gold-medal match at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations triple-A championship, the top-seeded Oakridge Oaks of London beat the No. 2 Panthers on Saturday.
The Panthers arrived at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School looking to defend their 2009 and 2010 provincial championships, but fell behind the Oaks early and couldn't recover. Oakridge ultimately secured its first title since 2007 with a 3-0 win. Set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 25-20.
Regi was caught off-guard by an early onslaught from the Oaks' explosive frontcourt, which recorded three quick kills en route to taking four of the first five points. After a first set dominated by Oakridge and a fast start to the second, the Panthers showed some resiliency. Down 20-13, Austin Payne and Ryan O'Neil combined for seven blocks as the team reeled off four straight points to pull within three. That was as close as they'd get, though, as Oakridge rebounded to reel off five straight points to take a commanding league.
The Panthers kept the score close in the final set and even took an early lead, their first since winning the opening point of the match. However, the Oaks, who didn't drop a set during the tournament, shut the door on any rally thoughts by securing the final four points and sealing the OFSAA championship.
In last year's final, Regi triumphed in four sets.
"(The Oaks) are an outstanding team and they deserve all the credit today," Panthers coach Mark McKenna said. "They took us out of our comfort zone and controlled play."
The silver medal put a damper on what was otherwise a terrific season for the Panthers.
Having already secured a seventh straight Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association title, the Panthers rolled into Steeltown with three straight-set victories in the preliminary pool before dispatching Birchmount Park of Scarborough and cross-province rival Chatham-Kent to reach the medal round. In a dramatic, five-set semifinal, Regiopolis-Notre Dame outlasted the Lockerby Vikings of Sudbury by preventing the completion of a comeback. The Vikings, who ended up winning bronze, rebounded from two sets down to force a deciding set, which the Panthers claimed 15-10.
On Saturday, the expression on the face of McKenna wasn't that of defeat but rather pride in the character he saw in his team.
"It's amazing to me how much growth these guys showed from September on," said McKenna. "When the group first came together, there was a bit of a divide with the Grade 11's and 12's because of the age differences. But within two weeks, the whole group had become so close and everybody was hanging out with all their teammates."
That team unity could be found on the faces of some of the Panthers. Team members sported moustaches (with Jamie Wright's coming courtesy of a magic marker) in support of Movember, but also, according to McKenna, "to show that we all like to have some fun and are comfortable with who we are."
After Saturday's game, McKenna wrapped up the season by commending the players on what he felt was a tremendous, season-long effort.
"I just told them that it's been a fantastic year and a lot of fun for me, personally," said McKenna. "They should all be proud of how much they accomplished."
In defeat, the players took in every one of their coach's words with their arms wrapped around one another.

Day Three - Championship Game: The Panthers faced a sturdy squad of Oaks from Oakridge SS in the OFSAA final. For the two provincial volleyball powers it was a rematch from last year where RND captured their third OFSAA title. Additionally the schools faced each other in the 2007 OFSAA final. The Panthers fought hard to counter the strong attack Oakridge mounted. However RND played inconsistently, putting together small runs trying to hold off the consistent execution of Oakridge. RND fell behind 2 games to 0 but rallied in the third and were serving to tie the set at 18 points. However Oakridge regrouped and pulled away from RND to take the OFSAA crown. The Panthers settled for OFSAA silver, a great accomplishment on the provincial stage. RND has now secured a OFSAA medal in seven consecutive years an exceptional run of success. Congratulations to all the Panthers and their coaches. Look to the RND Scoreboard for more information to be posted soon.
Day Two Report: Three games and three hard fought victories qualified the Panthers for their third straight OFSAA championship game. An early start saw the Panthers push past Birchmount in three sets (18-25, 31-29, 15-10) RND moved to into the playoff round to play cross-province rival Chatham-Kent in the important quarter-final game. Again some sets went "deep" as the Panther pulled off a medal qualifying victory (33-31, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21) To end the day at 6:30 the Panthers faced the Northern Ontario rep Lockerby. The experienced Panthers weathered the ups and downs of a thrilling match, capturing the semi-final in 5 sets (25-11. 25-18. 20-25, 22-25, 15-10) to qualify for the championship match at 4:00 on Saturday.
Day One Report: The Panthers are 3 - 0 after Day One Preliminary Pool play. Straight set wins over St. Joseph's (Windsor), Ancaster and St. Joseph's (Barrie) have the Panthers in perfect position at this point. An important early morning contest versus Birchmount Park will round out the preliminary round. All schedules and results are available on the Championship Web Site.
Pre-OFSAA Information:
Two Ontario towns, Stratford and Hamilton, hold great luck and memories for the players and coaches of the RND Volleyball programs. Though very different communities, both have been the host city when RND has captured the OFSAA AAA Volleyball Gold medal. (Stratford-2002, Stratford-2009, Hamilton-2010). OFSAA returns to Hamilton later this week and the Panther Volleyball squad is rounding into top shape and looking to cash in on the pattern of good luck on the court at OFSAA.
The RND community should wish the Volleyball squad good luck before they head off on Wednesday and can follow their success at OFSAA on the AAA Volleyball Championship web site as well as the updates on the RND Scoreboard.

Regi Makes It Seven
By Mike Koreen/The Whig-Standard - 11.13.11
This was not lucky number seven for the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers senior boys volleyball team.
After all, there's precious little luck involved when a team wins seven championships in a row.
One of the dominant volleyball programs in Ontario completed the rare seven-peat on Sunday as Regi swept the Loyalist Lancers in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association final at the Queen's Centre.
With Regi's strong feeder program and excellent coaching, the Panthers are a perennial provincial title threat for a reason. They figure to be looking for a third consecutive Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations triple-A title later this month in Hamilton.
"Our coaching is a big factor," said Regi power hitter Austin Payne. "It's a very strong program and our coaches have been coaching us since Grade 7. We respect them and listen to exactly what they want us to do."
While the underdog Lancers battled hard, the Panthers were in control throughout.
Whenever Regi got into a little bit of trouble, Payne and fellow power Andrew McCormack stepped up with big hits.
"We're normally the bail-out men," Payne said with a smile.
Payne, fittingly, finished things off with a kill in the third and final set — a 25-22 Regi win. The Mark McKenna-coached Panthers won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-18.
McCormack, Andrew Zalewski and Iain McLean are the three players gunning for an OFSAA three-peat.
"I think we've got a really good chance," McCormack said. "We're starting to look like OFSAA material, for sure."
The Panthers barely celebrated after the final kill. This is what happens when a team has provincial championship hopes.
First, the Panthers need to clinch one of two berths for this county at the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship on Thursday at Regi. The Kingston Blues also are in the four-team tourney and should have a fighting chance at that second EOSSAA spot. It would be an absolute shock if Regi doesn't take the first berth.
"We're just getting started," Payne said. "This is just the beginning. We've got OFSAA coming up and we're getting very excited for that."
The Lancers also have OFSAA on their minds — the double-A version in Stratford.
The Lancers need to win the EOSSAA AA competition on Thursday in Brockville to go to the provincials. Last year, after losing to Regi in the KASSAA final, the Lancers also lost in the gold-medal match at EOSSAA.
First-year Lancers coach Linda Tracey believes her squad has a very good chance to take that next step this year.
"We've played quite a few of those (EOSSAA contenders) and beaten them all," she said. "It would be disappointing if we're not at OFSAA."
McCormack also thinks the Lancers can make some noise at EOSSAA.
"They're a great team. They've had a good team the past three years," he said. "They're AA so they've got their own OFSAA. I hope they do well and represent KASSAA as well as us."
While Tracey was pleased with her team's effort, she was hoping for a bit of a closer match. The Lancers did take a set off the Panthers in the regular-season meeting.
"We're a little disappointed because the guys felt we could have done better," said Tracey, whose charges were cheered on by a noisy group of LCVI students.
Setter Sam Menard, left side Steven Bailey and libero Eric Down delivered standout performances for the Lancers.
For the first time in several years, KASSAA organizers split up the volleyball and girls basketball championships this year.
The girls hoops championship doubleheader goes on Monday night at the Queen's Centre. At 5 p.m., the Frontenac Falcons take on the Holy Cross Crusaders in the junior girls title tilt.
At 7 p.m., Regi and Holy Cross square off in the senior girls championship clash for the third year in a row. It's the first step on the road to AAA OFSAA, which is hosted by Holy Cross later this month. Games will take place across Kingston.

Senior Boys Volleyball - Seven Titles in a Row
The Senior Panthers survived a peculiar warm-up and once the game began the energy of their opponents and fans from Loyalist CVI to capture the KASSAA championship at Queen's ARC. The Seniors proved too strong at the net, both offensively and defensively altering the LC attack throughout the contest. The trademark RND defense, the core of the volleyball programs success, was again on display as the Panthers got to several balls that seemed destined for the floor, adding to their point total and frustrating their opposition. The win capped another undefeated season for Regi as they look to advance to OFSAA through the EOSSAA championships which will take place this Thursday in the CND gym. Action pictures, additional stories and more will be posted on this web site very soon. Well done Panthers.

Senior Panthers Power Through to Finals 11.10.11
The Senior squad hosted the Sydenham Golden Eagles in Semi-Final action on the CND gym. The Eagles proved no match for the Garnet and Gold as RND clinched a berth in the finals with a 3 - 0 win. Ryan O'Neill had seven kills and three stuff blocks to control the middle of the net. The Panthers are an athletic group looking to build on the string of successes by the Senior program over the past several years including seven consecutive KASSAA championships. However, before thoughts can turn to EOSSAA or OFSAA the Panthers must execute another element of their plan, Sunday at 3:00 in the main gym of the ARC at Queen's University. Plan to cheer on the Panthers.
