A Volleyball Dynasty

Taken from the Kingston Whig Standard - 11.29.10

When you have a 6-foot-5 senior who can jump higher than anyone else on the floor, you should probably just make sure he gets his touches.
Just ask the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers, who rode the power hitting of John Justinich to a second straight Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations triple-A boys volleyball championship Saturday at Mc-Master University.
Justinich, the lone starter to return from last year's championship team, finished with 20 points off blocks and kills as the Panthers downed the top-seeded Oakridge Oaks of London in a four-set championship final. Scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-13.
The Panthers, who have reached the podium at five consecutive provincial championships, were ranked third entering the tournament. Thanks to the help of Justinich and a few other key cogs, however, the Panthers are again atop the province.
"He (Justinich) is a beast and he is just so big that he finds ways to score. I mean everyone in the gym knows the ball is going to him, but he still gets his points somehow," Panthers head coach Mark McKenna said. "One of the big things for us (on Saturday) was just getting him the ball. We were able to do that with some soft blocks and different scrambling and it really was what we had to do to win."
Playing their seventh game in three days, the Panthers came out a little sluggish and paid for it, going down by as many as seven points in the first set.
Near the end of that set, McKenna called a timeout. The Panthers came out and went on a six-point run and from there on out, things took a different tone.
The momentum really shifted in the second set when the Panthers jumped out to a 10-2 lead, taking any air out of the Oaks' sails in the process.
"We needed to carry the momentum forward and that's what the timeout was all about," McKenna said after the game. "We were really tight and it wasn't as much about winning the set as it was about getting loosened up and luckily we were able to carry that into the second and even past that."
In the fourth set with the Oaks desperately trying to get something going, right side hitter Kyle Richards fell awkwardly on his shoulder and had to be carried off the floor.
The Panthers rolled after that as Justinich and left side hitter Martin Freundorfer took turns delivering highlight-reel kills.
Freundorfer eventually scored the championship winning point on a point off a block from the left side.
Afterward, he said Richards' injury likely played a part in the run the Panthers were able to go on to close out the game.
"That basically won us the game really easily," Freundorfer said. "He is one of their better players, so I think once they lost him they kind of got down on themselves and we smelt blood and went for it."
Justinich said he couldn't imagine a better ending to his high school volleyball career.
"It's definitely sweet to win a title when you are in Grade 12," he said. "I don't even know how to describe it. I mean I knew for sure we had a solid squad this year and would have a shot, but to win back to back. That's something."

A Chance to Defend OFSAA Gold 11.19.10
The RND Senior boys captured their 6th straight EOSSAA crown in decisive fashion. In pool play Regiopolis-Notre Dame dispatched the host Fellowes Falcons 2-0 (25-10, 25-8) and St. Joseph's Panthers 2-0 (25-16, 25-14) to finish first in their pool. In the semi-finals RND crushed Cornwall Collegiate 2-0 (25-6, 25-10) to match up with KASSAA rivals Sydenham in the final. Seeking to avenge their poor semi-final performance against the Golden Eagles, the Panthers dismantled their north of the city foes 2-0 (25-12, 25-10) to claim the championship. OFSAA Championship play begins November 25th in Mississauga. Go Panthers!!

Panthers Sweep Lancers in KASSAA Volleyball Doubleheader

Taken From the Kingston Whig Standard

For the second straight year, the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers rule high school boys volleyball in these parts.
The Panthers swept the junior and senior boys Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship games on Sunday at the Queen's Centre.
Regi beat the Loyalist Lancers in straight sets in the junior and senior contests.
The senior Panthers won their sixth KASSAA title in a row, while it was two in a row for the juniors.
"It's more relief than anything else," Panthers senior coach Mark McKenna said.
The Panthers always have a target on their backs. This year, they're the team everyone in the province wants to beat as Regi won the provincial triple-A title last year.
Eight players are back from last year's provincial championship squad, but just one starter -- John Justinich, who had eight kills in the final. Teammate Martin Freundorfer also had eight kills.
"We're in the mid 60s (in games played this season)," McKenna said. "We've seen everyone we need to see and assuming we go through to (the provincial championships with a win at the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship on Thursday in Pembroke), we should be a top-three seed."
McKenna was full of praise for Loyalist coach Tom Worthy, who coached both Lancers teams to championship appearances.
"I think it's fabulous that he got both teams to the final," McKenna said. "That's really a credit to his program."
The junior Panthers had to play without starting left side Fred Scott, who was hurt playing hockey this weekend. But Aidan Ross stepped into the starting lineup and did an outstanding job, coach Pat Farrell said.
Connor Santoni led the way with 14 kills for Regi.
Farrell said the Panthers missed just one serve all afternoon.
The Panthers host the EOSSAA triple-A junior event on Tuesday.
