Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers Win OFSAA GOLD! 11.25.02. (dl) ![]() The Regi squad, along with coaches Mr. Farrell and Mr. Ows, made the trip to Stratford on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as they had earned a very high standing in the "AAA" Boys Volleyball OFSAA Tournament. The boys were ranked 2nd behind last year's OFSAA Champions, Chatham Kent. Regi faced off in their first game against Iona, and defeated them 2-1. The second and third preliminary round game were almost identical as the Panthers won both 2-0, beating out Sudbury Notre Dame and Hamilton Barton. This put the cats into quarter-final action against host school St. Michael's. Regi dominated this game, winning 2-0, with comfortable scores of 25-17, 25-12. The semi's were against 3rd seeded team, Hillcrest, who has previously beaten Regi twice, and Regi beating them once. However, the Panthers showed their skill and won this game 3-0, advancing them to their first ever OFSAA final. They faced off against Chatham Kent, a talented team that had won three major tournaments this season. With 500 fans in the stands, 100 of them cheering for Regi, the game was sure to be intense and packed with some great volleyball. The Panthers dropped the first set 25-17. Regi won one of the next two, and Chatham Kent won one. This left the Panthers in a vulnerable position, Chatham Kent being one
set away from winning the championship. Regi had worked too hard all season
though to drop the finals in 4 sets, and with the coaching of Mr. Farrell
and leadership of captain Bryan McMillan, they got the boys in line, and
rallied back to win the fourth set 25-21 and tie the match. Farrell said
the fourth set was where the team's maturity kicked in. He praised McMillan
and his ability to take control and keep the team together, saying "His
leadership skills are second to none. He's the glue that holds us together
in difficult situations. In the fourth game we were down 17-14 and he
sort of brought the boys together and said, 'Now's the time.'" This seemed
to do the trick for Regi, as the team suddenly came together. In the decisive
fifth set, the Panthers were lucky to get a rotation of Parrish Offer,
Bryan McMillan and Bobby Tozer on the front line. Their height, their
ability, and the one-man digging machine Nick Irianto in the back court,
proved to be the boys' strength. The Panthers were up 14-12, but lost
a point, narrowing the lead by one. Chatham Kent then served the ball
four feet out of bounds to give the Panthers the win, 15-13.The atmosphere of the final game was electric and Farrell was so impressed with his players staying calm and thriving on the intensity the crowd was giving them. Graduating starters and well-known volleyball players, Parrish Offer, Bryan McMillan, Dave Keo and Bobby Tozer, all had a phenominal tournament. Offer, 6-foot-3, collected 21 kills in the final game over a 6-foot-7 guy, and was always there when they needed a big hit or a big play, almost jumping through the roof. McMillan played great consistant volleyball all weekend, making
some fantastic plays and being a true leader for his troop. Tozer and
Keo carried a calm demeanour out there, Farrell noted. Tozer is a Grade
12 player, who's hits from middle are unstoppable, and he had 10 blocks
in the finals. Keo is simply and quite clearly the best setter in the
province his coach says, and a talented hitter at the same time, earning
himself a cheer during the tournament, "That's our setter" whenever he
hit the ball.Winning OFSAA is something many of them dreamed of, and the timing was perfect. 8 players returned this year to capture the gold medal, and the core group of guys have played together since Grade 9. With the majority of them graduating, a gold medal at OFSAA finishes off their high school volleyball career quite deservingly, as this squad is dedicated, talented, and clearly, a force to be reckoned with. Farrell put together everything they were feeling in one simple sentence, saying "It was probably the best experience, coaching or playing, of my life." Not only did they get what they wished for, but they did it in 3 sets. In front of 500 fans last night, Regi dominated the game, with some spectacular kills and blocks, as well as having a passing game to perfection. The cats were ahead 2-0, having won those sets 25-16 and 25-15, clearly being the stronger team. Both of these sets were confirmed with thunderous kills from the left side from Parrish Offer, leading his team in double figures in kills and blocks. Ernestown made a game out of the third set however, the set being within one point during the whole game. The Panthers and the Eagles were tied at 22, until Bobby Tozer hit one of his many unstoppable hits to get his team ahead of the tie and go on to win the final set. Bryan McMillan, Parrish Offer and Bobby Tozer, the three big men for the Panther squad, all played to their full potential and set the tone of the game. Coach Mr. Farrell said, "They were huge at the net. They were able to shut down Wade Ennis. He's easily one of the best powers in the league and shutting him down made a big difference. I knew that when we started blocking him that good things were going to happen." This
is Farrell's second consecutive win at the Kingston Area high school senior
boys volleyball championship.Besides the "3 big men", Dave Keo, Cleo Ncube and Junior Romero, all stepped up to the champoinship game level. Farrell said, "Cleo Ncube played the best game of his high school career." Keo, Romero and Ncube all made some fantastic plays and kills that truly made them championship game material. Offer attributed the win to the Panthers almost flawless passing. "We know when we're passing like we were tonight, we can play with anyone in the league and in the province." Regi will play against St. Joseph's of Cornwall in the EOSSAA championship, which will be at Regi on Wednesday. The winner of this game will advance to the provincial AAA championship in Stratford the following week. Come out to support your Panthers, as they are hopefully OFSAA bound.
