First-year
Receiver Plays Like a Veteran
Taken From the Kingston Whig Standard
With a 6-foot-1 build and very good speed, Kenzie Harris had all the
attributes to be a solid receiver.
Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers junior football coach Will Geris gave
Harris that chance this season and the youngster took full advantage
of the opportunity.
Shifted to receiver from offensive tackle this season, Harris responded
with a game MVP performance in the Panthers' 43-6 demolition of the
Sydenham Golden Eagles in the junior football final on Saturday at Richardson
Stadium.
Harris hauled in two long touchdown passes from quarterback David Cochrane
and also rushed for a major to lead the Panthers (8-0) to their first
Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association title since 2003.
"We saw he was a good basketball player and we made him a receiver,"
Geris said. "He's worked out. He's a big guy, he's like a man.
He can play (any sport). If he wants to stick with football, he can
go places."
After a Sydenham fumble early in the second quarter, Harris opened the
scoring by hauling in a 63-yard bomb from Coachrane.
It was all Regi after that. Star running back Liam Brand added two touchdowns
and Ryan Fox also rushed for a major.
"I thought it was going to be more challenging," said Harris,
whose team edged Sydenham 10-8 in the regular season and needed a final-minute
scoring drive to beat the Holy Cross Crusaders in a semifinal.
"But our boys, we have heart and we have determination and we came
out and showed it."
The Panthers also had a proud graduate cheering them on from south of
the border.
Ex-Regi star Cory Greenwood, now a rookie with the National Football
League's Kansas City Chiefs, relayed several messages to the team through
Geris, his onetime coach.
Peter and Lana Greenwood, the parents of the first Kingston native to
play in the NFL, attended Saturday's game.
"He's given us several (e-mail) messages from Kansas City ? just
things like when you're at the top, everybody is trying to knock you
off and how you have to play every down until the last play of the game,"
Geris said.
"They're things I tell the kids all the time, but when they are
coming from an NFL player who played for me, it means a lot.
"I tell the kids, 'This kid was just like you when he was 14 and
he's playing in the NFL. That's what you can do.'"
The Eagles hit the scoreboard late in the contest when quarterback Dylan
Fisher hit Cole Palmer for a 12-yard TD strike.
"They were bigger, stronger and faster," Eagles coach Jim
Latimer said of the Panthers.
Sydenham suffered some key injuries in a semifinal loss to the Kingston
Blues and just couldn't compete with the Panthers on championship Saturday.

Friday Night Lights at Tindall Field 10.11.10
Over
2000 High School Football fans lined the Tindall Field for four hours
of entertaining football on Friday as the Panthers clashed with the
Crusaders in the annual Catholic Cup contest.
The the opening Junior game RND used its energy and athleticism to outpace
Holy Cross in posting a 14 - 0 victory. The Panthers used a successful
ground game that saw Liam Brand scored twice withTroy Almeida cashing
in the converts. Defensively RND were able to keep HC from gaining any
momentum as the Panthers moved to 2 - 0 in KASSAA play.
The senior contest
started with a flurry of scoring as HC opened with a touchdown drive
only to see RND take the following kick off back for a tying touchdown.
Soon afterward the Panthers blocked a punt deep inside the Crusaders
end, but only came away with 1 point. That was RND's last, best offensive
opportunity to score as both teams played fast-paced and disciplined
football.
Juniors
Kick Off with a Win 09.25.10
The Panthers
opened their season at Lasalle where they put the Black Knights on their
heels right away when RND's Zach Emelifeonwu returned the opening kick
off for an 80 yard score. Balanced running and passing attack set the
stage on offence for touchdown receptions by McKenize Harris and runs
by Liam Brand. Troy Almeida converted all three majors. The defence held
LSS at bay for most of the afternoon and even added to the scoreboard
with Tyler Ling made a tackle to record a safety.
