Good Luck at OFSAA 11.05.09 RND has two groups of championship teams competing at OFSAA. Click Here to link to the OFSAA Field Hockey Championships in Kitchener and follow the results of the Panthers. Game 1: Versus Resurrection S.S.(Kitchener)- RND started the OFSAA tournament against the #3 hometown seed, losing 5 - 0. RND played a solid defense considering the Panthers are missing their starting goalie and two starting defense due to injury and illness. Kristin O'Neill, rookie grade nine stepped into defensive position and Erin Corrigan played stellar defense, moving back from her usual mid-field. Game 2: Versus Applewood S.S. - In an evenly matched game the Panthers fell 2 - 1. Both teams played a fast game through poor weather conditions. It was a skilled match with lots of forward pressure on both ends. Meagan Jackson scored on a pass from rookie Maddie Tripp. Game 3: Versus Michael Power-The Panthers finished the OFSAA tournament with a 0 - 0 tie. With such a young team the experience of OFSAA may help as RND hopes to return to the Provincial stage again very soon. RND Field Hockey Captures Marathon Championship 10.29.09 In a contest that finished over two hours after it started the RND Panthers captured the KASSAA / EOSSAA championship this afternoon on the turf of Tindal field at Queen's University. The win secured a perfect record for the
Panthers and pushes them into the OFSAA
Championships in Kitchener next week.RND dominated field position for the entire match but the Sydenham keeper was up to the task against several solid shots. RND defenders had to be on their toes as long clearing shots by Sydenham defenders were chased down by SHS forwards. RND defenders held firm pushing the ball back toward the SHS goal. The RND mid-fielders played an exceptional game. They helped forwards keep the ball in the SHS end, often making long runs to switch the RND attack from one side of field to the opposite side. After 60 minutes at 0 - 0 the teams played two full overtime periods, then followed by a single sudden death period. With nothing settled the teams moved to the dreaded penalty strokes phase. Here Panther grade nine goalie Maggie Veitch showed that she could be counted on stopping all three attempts as the Panthers then scored on their three attempts (Maddie Tripp, Brieanna Duffy, Jes Donaldson) to secure the win. Well Done Panthers. Check back later for a more complete report and to seen plans for success at OFSAA. Panthers Prevail From the Kingston Whig Standard - Friday, October 30, 2009 Mike Koreen Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers field hockey star Brieanna Duffy had a frightful flashback as the ball whizzed toward her face yesterday. "I actually almost got hit again and I almost cried because I was so nervous," Duffy said of the near-miss on a rising ball late in the 2009 Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship. "I guess my reflexes are faster than last year." Good thing, too. One year less a day after she broke her nose on a deflected ball in the second half of a loss in the KASSAA final, the relentless Duffy avoided injury this time around and got to celebrate a long-awaited championship. The energetic Duffy was one of three Panthers to score in penalty flicks as two-time reigning runner-up Regi reclaimed the county crown with a 1-0 victory over the Sydenham Golden Eagles at Tindall Field. "I can't even explain (what she felt last year), the pain and at the same time losing the KASSAA final (against the Frontenac Falcons)," said Duffy, who found out her team lost last year when she received a text message while waiting for the doctor. "The doctor comes in," she added, "and I'm balling. I'm like, 'It's not because of my nose. We lost.' I'd take the nose break over a loss." Back for a fifth year, Duffy was determined to get to the winner's circle. Duffy helped Regi dominate the game, but Sydenham goaltender Kelsey Downey was the star of the 60-minute regulation and the 25-minute overtime, somehow keeping the ball out of the Golden Eagles net. Finally in the flicks, the Panthers prevailed to cap an undefeated season in conference play. Duffy,
fellow Regi standout Jessica Donaldson, a Team Ontario under-16 player,
and Maddie Tripp, scored on their flicks, while Panthers goaltender Maggie
Veitch stopped attempts by Brook Davy, Lyndsay Glass and Sydney Asselstine."We were very, very hungry for the win," Panthers co-coach Caitlin Cerre said. "It seems to always go to flicks when we play Sydenham, so I had a hunch it would (yesterday)." The Golden Eagles, who beat the Napanee Golden Hawks in flicks in semifinal play, defended with zeal against an attacking Regi outfit. Centre half Lacey Tryon was a major factor in Sydenham's strong season and kept up her solid play yesterday against the powerful Panthers. Downey made several great pad saves on Regi shooters after shutting out the Golden Hawks in flicks. "She (Downey) was awesome," Sydenham coach Jaime Swaine said. "It was fourth place playing first place so we were definitely the underdog. But we were ready for it. We worked really hard." In the flicks, Grade 9 goalie Veitch shined in the spotlight for Regi. A soccer goalie, Veitch hadn't played field hockey before this season. "It took a little bit of arm-twisting (to get her out)," Cerre said. "She actually hasn't been tested much until now, but she really did a good job under pressure." Cerre can say the same of her entire team, which copped the KASSAA title for the first time since winning it three times in a row from 2004 to 2006. With no competition in the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association, the Panthers advance directly to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship next week in Kitchener. "I'm hoping to make it to the quarterfinals," Cerre said. "It's definitely a different skill level. The Toronto area teams have a greater pool of players to play with, but I definitely think we can make the top eight." In a team huddle after the game, Cerre told her players she was going to work them hard in practice early next week in an effort to be as prepared as possible for the provincials. Before she hopped on her bicycle for the ride home, Cerre made sure to stress one more thought. "I'm very proud of them," she said. Busy Home Field Semi-Final Win 10.27.09 Today on the Brother O'Gara field, surrounded by fans and football players, the Panthers outlasted the Holy Cross Crusaders 1 - 0 to advance to the KASSAA final. Deep into the second half Taylor Morgan banged in the winning marker in a game that saw Holy Cross sag back to defend their goal throughout the contest. The Panther dominated field position witnessed by the shut-out, no goals, no shots, performance by the RND defense and keeper. The powerful Panther program now sends it's eighth straigth team to the KASSAA finals, on Thursday on the Tindal field and Queen's University. Field
Hockey Quarter-Finally 10.26.09Three extra days due to the flu bug weaving it's way through RND and Loyalist Collegiate, were a necessary delay before the RND Panther's home pitch quarter-final match until this afternoon. Taylor Morgan again hung in tough in front of the oppositions goal and was rewarded with the game-winning marker. RND will finish in the regular season in first place and must await the conclusion of Tuesday's games before their quarter-final playoff opponent can be identified.
