OFSAA Report #4 - Last Minute Disappointment 11.03.06
The RND Panthers fought a valiant battle this afternoon in Scarborough during the OFSAA Quarter-Final match versus Oakville Trafalgar. Both teams had good scoring opportunities in a very well played first half where players were able to show their skill in several end to end rushes. RND began to use their fitness to their advantage as they held the field advantage throughout the second half. The Panthers pressed on several occasions and once seemed to have scored when the ball dribbled across the goal line. Minutes later a surprising bounce on a defensive short corner left the Panthers vunerable and a solid strike ended RND season.
In the minutes after the game the disappointment of the sudden end to the season was unavoidable. However, with some time and perspective RND players and fans will certainly realize that the Panthers were true to the spirit of the Garnet and Gold and added volumes to the reputation of Canada's Oldest English Catholic School. Congratulations Girls - RND is Proud of Your Effort and Accomplishments!
OFSAA Report #3 - On To The Quarters 11.03.06
RND dropped their first game of the OFSAA Championships on Friday morning 1 - 0 to Applewood. RND still advances to the quarterfinals as the second placed team in their pool. The playoff game time for this afternoon is 1:30PM against a team to be determined. Check back here for more updates as they become available.
OFSAA Report #2 - Day One Success 11.02.06
A coaches report from the sideline after game two relayed back to the RND Scoreboard that Kate Gillis lead the Panthers with two goals and Casey Tulk banged in another marker as RND moved to 2 - 0 in preliminary round play with a 3 - 0 victory over Birchmount. The girls now look forward to this evenings OFSAA Banquet
and some rest in preparation for fifth ranked Applewood Heights tomorrow morning at 9:30am.
OFSAA Report #1 - RND takes Game 1 11.02.06
Goals by Justine Sutton and Nikki Loyst pushed the Field Hockey Panthers by Crestwood (Peterborough) in the opening game of th OFSAA Field Hockey championships.
The 2 - 0 victory was also highlighted by the shut-out goaltending of Whitney Desarmia.
RND next take the field at 2:30 versus Birchmount of Toronto. Check back to the RND Scoreboard for all the OFSAA updates. GO PANTHERS!!

Within the high school sport structure the pinnacle of competition is OFSAA. However, the RND Field Hockey team travels to Toronto tomorrow not satisfied with their achievements to date. An experienced and well prepared group of Panthers are seeded fourth in the Provincial Championships and are poised to challenge for a medal and better yet the provincial title. The girls leave RND at 2:30 from the Cowdy Street entrance. Make sure to wish the players luck during the day on Wednesday and stay glued to the RND Scoreboard for frequent updates from the OFSAA championships. Panther Three-Peat for Field Hockey 10.25.06
With all the offensive power the Panthers displayed during their unbeaten season it was a defensive play, a penalty stroke save by keeper Whitney Desarmia, that preserved the shut-out season and ignited the offensive fire that carried RND to victory.
A determined group of Falcons from Frontenac held off the Panthers in the first half and the contest was certainly in doubt at half-time. RND came out and received an almost instant energy boost when Casey Tulk scored less than two minutes into the second frame on a onetimer from Laura King. The scoring contiued as Laura King, Casey Tulk and Kate Gillis each added goals.
16 minutes later the ball had rarely crossed into RND's defensive half and the 4 - 0 score had confirmed the Panther's dominance of the KASSAA field hockey league. Whitney Desarmia added another shut out to make her season total 8 in all.

Congratulations to all the RND players. They should be commended on their dedication, determination and the team effort that has been displayed throughout the season. Their next goal is only a week away, as they strive for excellence at OFSAA in Scarborough. Preview the Provincial Championship at the OFSAA Field Hockey web site: Click Here.

Regi beats Frontenac 4-0 for third straight field hockey title

Patrick Kennedy

Local Sports - Thursday, October 26, 2006 @ 07:00

The Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers had several factors in their favour heading into yesterday's high school field hockey final at Brother O'Gara Field. For starters, there was that imposing 7-0 record, compiled, incidentally, without the cats having surrendered a goal en route to that unblemished mark.
Regi also sported the league's best player in Kate Gillis, who toiled with not one but three different Ontario all-star teams last summer and who next autumn commences a collegiate career in Massachusetts.
There was also goalie Whitney Desarmia, she of the seven successive shutouts.
Lost in these attributes was this intangible: Regi is a terrific second-half team, a squad that for some reason shifts into high gear only after an intermission.Case in point: yesterday's 4-0 title tilt triumph over the Frontenac Falcons.

The cats tallied all of their goals in the second half, dominating play so thoroughly that the visitors rarely set foot in Panther territory.
"One of the main things about Regi is its overall fitness," lauded Frontenac coach Rachelle Seguin afterwards. "Being fit tends to serve a team well in the second half of games, which was the case [yesterday]."
Casey Tulk scored twice for the winners, with Laura King and Gillis adding singles.
Desarmia posted her eighth consecutive zero, and while tested only sparingly - and not at all in the latter half - her pivotal stop of Falcon Nicole Cathcart's penalty stroke kept the first half scoreless - and the Panthers from falling behind for the first time all year.
"It's funny, but we worked on [penalty] strokes in practice this week," Gillis pointed out. "Not only for us but for Whit as well, because a couple of years ago the championship game came down to strokes."
The win marks the third straight county crown for the Panthers and veterans Gillis, Tulk, King, Desarmia and Nikki Loyst, to name a few.
With no regional playoff, Regi advances to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship tournament starting a week today in Agincourt. Last year, Regi, seeded seventh at OFSAA, bowed out in the quarter-finals. Gillis said the difference between the current Panther pack and its predecessor is self-assuredness. "I'd say this team has much more confidence in that we know what it takes to win at that level," she said.
Gillis, who participated in her final high school game in Kingston, said she's looking forward to her debut next autumn with Boston College, which she called a "bigger version" of Regi. "It even has the same school colours," she said. The selfless, cat-quick forward earned a full athletic scholarship from the Catholic college, which garnered lasting fame, if not fortune, via Eagles quarterback Doug Flutie's famous Hail Mary pass in 1999, a toss that beat Miami on the final play of the game. Gillis was heavily recruited and in the end chose Boston College ahead of a dozen or so schools including Princeton, Harvard, Cornell, Michigan and Stanford. First, however, Gillis and crew have unfinished business to attend to next Thursday, namely capture the Limestone City's first provincial field hockey crown.

Field Hockey Frenzy For the Finals 10.23.06
The Panther Girls did their part on Monday with a convincing 3 - 0 semi-final victory over KCVI. Despite the slipping and sliding through the mud RND was able to grab a 1 - 0 half-time lead on Casey Tulk's goal. After the break, Stephanie Turnbull scored on a onetimer from Laura King and got her second goal on a short corner tip from Kate Gillis. Whitney Desarmia recorded another shutout, her 7th of
the season.

On Wednesday it's time for the RND Community to do their part and get out to Support the Garnet and Gold Girls in the KASSAA finals. RND is looking to cap off an unprecedented season with a victory over the Falcons of Frontenac. This will be the final home game for several seniors who have help build the reputation RND now has for excellence in field hockey. Let's line the Brother O'Gara Field and help push the Panthers to a KASSAA championship.

Panthers Jump the Blues 10.03.06
Breaking out to a 2-0 first half lead seemed to prematurely solidify victory in a less than memorable field hockey contest on the Brother O'Gara field at RND. The discipline and fitness that the Panther squad has focused on all season was in evidence throughout the contest that ended 5 - 0 for RND.

Panther Field Hockey is Terrific in Toronto 10.01.06
At the June Collard School Girls' Tournament in Toronto the RND "Gold" field hockey team competed in four games and was extremely successful, winning all four games, 4-0 against Loyalist, 2-0 against Godridge, 3-0 against North Hastings and 1-0 against Waterloo Oxford. Goalie Whitney Desarmia tallied a tournament shutout with the help of a strong team in front of her. RND's tournament high scorers were: Casey Tulk 5, Laura King 2, Justine Sutton 2, Stephanie Turnbull 1.
At the same event The RND "Garnet" field hockey team were impressive in their first tournament of the year. The team had two wins against Loyola (1-0)and Middlefield (2-1), a loss to Bayridge 1-0 and a tie with J. Clarke Richardson. Olivia Carey 1, Paige Kasaboski 1, Nicole Byrne 1, provided the goal scoring for RND.
Congratulations to all the players on a successful tournament. The present and the future is bright for RND field hockey! Fans should make plans to be on the Brother O'Gara field this Tuesday as the Panthers host their cross-town rivals the KCVI Blues.

First year Regi field hockey goalie, Brittany Dolan was incredible in net allowing only two goals in regular tournament play.
The sun came out for a hard fought final against Oakville Trafalgar. Regular play ended in a 0-0 tie, both teams moving the play from one end to the other. Brittany was again up to the task, not allowing any of the five shooters to score in overtime. Niki Loyst scored on the penalty shot to win the game. Captain Kate Gillis was awarded MVP. Congratulations to all the Field Hockey Panthers. The girls next see action on Thursday in Sydenham in a re-match of last seasons thrilling KASSAA final.

Season Starts as Season Ended 09.19.06
The last time the Field Hockey Panthers were on the Brother O'Gara Field they were very convincing in their KASSAA championship game performance. Eleven months later RND was equally impressive in their season opening shutout win of the Falcons of Frontenac. An early goal by Casey Tulk was the only tally in the intensely played first half. In the second frame the team really came together with passing, resulting in great goals by veteran Nikki Loyst and rookie Stephanie Turnbull. The scoring ended with a short-corner goal from captain Kate Gillis. A great start to the season for rookie and veteran players alike, and great competition from the Frontenac team.
