OFSAA Field Hockey Championships
-- Day One.
Powerhouse
Notre Dame of Burlington chased the Regiopolis Notre Dame out of this
weekend's provincial high shool field hockey championships with a 3-0
quarter-final victory. The Panthers (1-2-1) advanced out of the preliminary
round only to meet the defending champion in the first round of playoffs
at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament
in St. Catherines. "Notre Dame's a very good team, strong team and we
held them scoreless for more than half the game," said Panther Rachel
Cerre, who potted both goals in th team's only other loss, 3-2 to Missisauga's
Lorne Park on Friday. "Notre-Dame should have scored earlier on, but
Liz Priestley made a lot of big saves for us." Priestly, the Panther's
goalie, recorded two shutouts in the tournament, an opening-day scoreless
duel with Agincourt and a 2-0 victory over St. Jean de Brebeuf. Ashley
Gollogly and Bridget Cerre tallied for Regi in that game.

The oldest tradition in high school
girls field hockey is that of Sydenham and La Salle passing the local
championship back and forth.
They are the only two names engraved on the EOSSA and Kingston Area
Secondary Schools Association championship trophies, and usually they
play each other in the final. The Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers wrote
a new script this year, beating the Kingston Blues 2-0 in the championship
match on their own field yesterday afternoon.
The Panthers scored on a first-half deflection and although the Blues
held the edge in play in the second half and had several good chances,
a long pass and a breakaway late in the second period gave Regi an insurmountable
lead.
Chanting "We're going to OFSAA!" the Panthers, who finished the season
7-0, accepted the eastern Ontario championship trophy. The provincial
championships will take place in St. Catharines starting Thursday.
"It's
great for both teams to be here," said Mary Elaine Carty, one of the
Panthers' coaches, on the two new schools in the county championship.
Fellow coach Caitlin Cerre said Regi had an experienced team that had
played together for years. It has been seven years since the school
made an appearance in the final but she said this year's edition had
everything it needed.
"There's so much talent all around this team, and everybody really clicked
this year," she said.
Regi won't be going into the provincial finals blind. The Panthers played
many of the best teams in the province, several of whom will also be
competing at OFSAA, in a tournament in Toronto earlier this season,
and the team did well there, Cerre said.
Regi went ahead in the first half on a goal that was awarded to Ashley
Gollogly, who took a pass from Danielle Greene and put it into the Blues
net thanks to a deflection.
The Blues played strongly in the second half and spent most of it in
the Panthers' end, but goalkeeper Liz Priestly made several fine stops,
including a kick save on a long shot from midfield.
A twin effort put Regi up by two and knocked the Blues out of the game.
Bridget Cerre fired a long pass up the middle of the field that was
scooped up by her sister, Rachel, who broke past the Blues defenders
and finished the breakaway with a clean shot into the net.

In
Regi and Frontenac's Field Hockey semi-final match at RND yesterday, the
girls upset the Falcons' Cinderella story by playing the roll of the evil
step-sisters. Beating them 4-0, the Panthers won their six-straight game,
sending them to the Kingston Association championship tomorrow. Joining
them will be the Kingston Collegiate Blues, who made it to this final
game last year. 3-0 was the score of the game after a very strong first
half. Rachel Cerre scored twice and Candice Smith finished with a single.
In the second half, Laural Niedbala added the last of the four goals,
while Liz Priestly counted her fifth shut-out of their season. They have
proved themselves strong both offensively and defensively. They have much
to be proud of. Regi opened this year's season by playing KC, winning
4-0. Their ability to perform under pressure will be tested tomorrow,
Friday, October 25th at Regi. Everyone is encouraged and welcome to attend
the Field Hockey championship against the Blues. This game determines
who moves onto OFSAA. Good Luck, ladies! For The Whig's story, click HERE.
KASSAA Record 7-0 In
Honour of Cathy Joyce 10.18.02
(jv)
On Tuesday, Regi and Holy Cross' Cathy Joyce Memorial Field Hockey game
took place at Holy Cross. In the first half, Bridget Cerre managed to
get the ball past Holy Cross' goalie, allowing Regi to take an important
1-0 lead. The girls fought hard to hold their place. This goal, the only
one of the game, gave the Panthers their well-rewarded victory in honour
of Cathy Joyce. For finishing first place in the league, Regi's Field
Hockey team received a bye to the semifinal round. You'll be able to cheer
on Regi's unstoppable team when they play the unpredictable Frontenac
Falcons. The game will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd on Regi's home
turf. It will most likely be the next step to OFSAA!

Continues their Streak with Win over Lasalle10.03.02

The Panther's Field Hockey team pulled away yet again with another win!
The team traveled to Lasalle last night where they defeated the Knights
4-3 in an entertaining and well-played game. A penalty flick helped Lasalle
inch closer but it wasn't enough. Hats off to the excellent goal tending
by Liz Priestley and expert defensive skills by Nicole Jackson.
Victory Over Defending KASSAA Champs 10.01.02
Out in Sydenham
the RND Field Hockey squad triumphed in a high scoring affair over the
defending KASSAA champion Golden Eagles. Rachel Cerrie's three goals sparked
the Panthers to a 5-3 victory. It was the first defeat in more than a
year for the Golden Eagles, who were unbeaten en route to last year's
championship. Danielle Greene and Jen Boulianne added goals for the Panthers,
who were up 3-1 at the half. You can read about the Panthers scoring outburst
