Regi Claims Junior Girls Basketball Crown
CLAUDE SCILLEY
The Whig-Standard
Ultimately, the Holy Cross Crusaders simply couldn't cope with the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers.
"They've probably got 10 people who can start and when they put new people in they don't lose any skills," Crusaders coach Alec Murray lauded Monday night, after his team was defeated 30-18 by Regi in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association junior girls basketball final.
"They pressure the ball, the pressure all over the court and they keep running at you."
The Crusaders kept the game close for a while. Regi, undefeated during the regular schedule and a team that won by less than 16 points only once, led just 15-9 at halftime.
"I thought we defended well to hold them to 30," Murray said. "We just couldn't score. In the first half we missed some layups, some shots that we might not normally miss.
"That was the difference in the game."
Panthers coach Lesley Stevenson said the game lacked energy and she suspects players on both sides were a bit intimidated by playing in the Queen's University Athletic and Recreation Centre main gym.
"It was a typical junior girls (final)," she said, "with girls afraid to make mistakes, afraid to step outside of the comfort zone.
"(Holy Cross is) a good team. They're well coached and this is such an equalizer, this gym. It's the first time for 10 of my kids to be here, and I'm sure for Alec it's the same. You just don't know what to expect from their heads. They're not mature enough yet to know you just play. There's a lot of mojo going on in their heads."
Mackenzie Curran led Regi with 10 points, while Bridget Mulholland scored eight. Donya Hojabr and Jenna Whalen scored five points apiece for Holy Cross.
The Crusaders will host Brockville Thousand Islands and St. Joseph's of Cornwall Wednesday in a three-team Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association AAA championship tournament.

Playoff Week 11.04.12
The Panthers host a Tuesday Tripleheader of KASSAA Basketball and Volleyball Quarter-Final action. Garnet & Gold fans are needed in the CND gym to cheer the Panthers squads on as they look to qualify for Thursday and semi-final action.
Semi-Finals
Trailing by 2 at the end of three quarters RND went on a 16 to 5 run in the games final frame to secure a semi final victory over an aggressive group of Golden Eagles from Sydenham High School. Bridget Mulholland and Holly Kinstler dropped 13 and 14 points in the win. The Panthers were able to score in transition thanks to the tireless full court pressure that turned the ball over frequently in the later stages of the contest.
Quarter-Finals

Panther scored in a quarter-final home court victory over the visiting Blues of KCVI. Kristina Nuvoloni with 8 points lead the Garnet & Gold who now move on to KASSAA Semi-Final action on Thursday.

The Junior Girls Basketball team used their fast break style of play to great success over the weekend capturing the Junior version of the Taylor Allen Memorial tournament hosted by Lasalle Secondary School. Opening round wins over Bayridge and Rideau place the girls in the playoff bracket. There they disposed of KASSAA foes Holy Cross and the host LSS Black Knights. The Panthers run and gun style and four games in 30 hours meant that important contributions were made by every member of the squad. Tip-Off Success for the Junior Panthers 09.14.12
The young run and gun Junior Girls Basketball team began their 2012 campaign on their home court in the CND gym at Regiopolis-Notre Dame. The girls seemed very familiar with the Garnet & Gold setting pushing the ball on offense and learning the fundamentals and responsibilities of defense. A couple of wins over KASSAA foes; Frontenac and Lasalle was only one part of the long evening as the team also commited to the expectations of the season ahead and set a firm foundation for improvement.
