The Peter Carty Memorial was established in 1989 by Paul Halligan, who was then a basketball coach at Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School. Paul envisioned an opportunity for RND and Holy Cross to come together in friendly competition while raising money and awareness for cancer research. Named for Paul's best friend and classmate at Regi, the event brought together many in the community who had been inspired by the life of Peter Carty, and who had been saddened by his death from cancer, at age 22, in 1984.

The event has regularly featured a double header of boys' basketball between the RND Panthers and Holy Cross Crusaders. Through its first seven years, and primarily through the effort and vision of Paul Halligan, over $29 000 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society through admissions, t-shirt and sweatshirt sales, donations, silent auctions and raffles. In 1997, Paul invited all high schools in the Kingston area to participate in the Full Court Press Against Cancer; 34 teams played at 6 sites, raising over $13 000 for cancer research and treatment.

Since 1997, The Memorial and Full Court Press have carried on the tradition of community and friendly competition that Paul envisioned. RND and Holy Cross continue to play in spirited games hosted in alternate years by each school, and the Full Court Press now includes a two day elementary school tournament at two differenent sites. Last year alone, over $16 000 was raised from these events, bringing the 18 year total to over $227 000. This year we celebrate the nineteenth anniversary of Paul Halligan's vision of community and athletics in the 2008 Full Court Press Against Cancer.
