This is my story on my day and life as an inuit. It is me as an inuit. I go through morning, noon, afternoon, and night. I worked hard on this and I hope that you like it because it just might be very boring or very exciting to you. I will let you decide that.
My name is Qaajui. I am an Inuit I live in Nunivut with my parents. We live
in an igloo. I helped my father build our
igloo.
Its cold outside but I am warm in the igloo with my parents. I wake up. I
hear father going to hunt. For breakfast I have the seal meat that my mother
cooked over the fire. I carefully put on my kamiks made out of otter. I also
put on my nassak, mitts and parka. I grab my savik and spears. I start to
walk towards the ice and hope that an animal is there so I do not have to
wait or hunt for one. I go up beside the hole and get my spear ready for a
seal or an otter. Across the ice I see a polar bear. I slowly creep up on
it. It does not see me because it is waiting for a seal. I aim my spear. I
throw it forward and hits the great beast. It is not dead but hurt badly so
I get another spear. The bear jumps at me but I get out of the way. I throw
the other spear and it too stabs the beast. Its weak and I have one spear
left but I need that later so I do something crazy. I jump on its back with
my savik in my hand and I stab the back hanging on for my life. It roars a
call of defeat and I fall off. It falls to the ground. We shall have a good
lunch today. As I take it back to my mother I also try to take out the
spears but they snap as I thought they would. My savik does not break for it
is strong and very stiff. My mother will enjoy what I have brought back. It
is my mothers responsibility to skin the animals and prepare the meal.
While my mother cooks lunch I make another spear but then my mother calls me
for lunch.
We have polar bear for lunch and my mother tells me to get some fish and
seal for dinner and some otter for fathers new nassak and mitts. I tell her
that I do not have enough spears and I need a bow for a special treat. She
gives me the bow and some arrows and lets me make another spear and Im off.
l take the dogsled for I will come bake with a lot of food. First I get my
aulasaulk and start ice fishing. I catch three fish so I start to wait for
seals. I get my spear ready as I did before with the polar bear. I am
waiting quietly beside the hole. A seal pops his head up and tries to go
back as fast as he can but I am faster and my aim is true. I also have a
lot of strength so he dies instantly. I pull it up onto the ice and I wait
for another seal. Hopefully my surprise is out today. Another seal pops up
but this one splashes water in my eyes so it escapes. I changed to my bow
and arrow. Another seal pops up and I let my finger off the string. It
strikes the seal perfectly. I lift it onshore beside the first seal. I put
the seals on the dogsled with the fish and go to another hole. Right when I
get there two otters pop onto the ice. I hurl two spears and each hit an
otter. The otters fall. I am glad I have enough animals so far but it is
time for me to try and hunt for my surprise, an elk. I take the dogsled
team and we search and search and finally find an elk wandering around on
the frozen wasteland. I am careful because they are fast and can kill a
human. I get in position in case it starts to run at me. I shoot an arrow
at it and it hits the elk. The elk runs at me and I command the dogsled
team to run. The elk slows down so I take another shot at him and strike
him right in the heart. It falls. I load it on the dogsled with the other
dead animals and go home.
When I arrive back at the camp my parents are amazed at my hunting skills.
We have a late supper but mother and father dont care for they like what I
have brought back. We feast on elk, fish and seal. After dinner mother
starts to work on fathers nassak and mitts. My father congratulates me and
tells me I am a grown man and they would not worry so much about me when I
go hunting. Now I go to sleep so that I can be ready to hunt tomorrow
morning, noon and night.
I enjoy my life as an Inuit in Canada. I hope to keep the Inuit heritage
alive.
