Introduction

This is my project on ancient Greece. I will be telling you about life, dress code, food and some very interesting things about my project loved doing my project because I found a lot of things I didn't know about the Greeks.

Education

"Both Education and Daily Life were different in Sparta, than in Athens and other Greek/City-states." When accepting the Athenians (who thought Athens was the best city in the world!), Greeks from other city-states couldn't help but admire the Spartans but they would not want to be Spartans. Although when they at war they wanted to have the Spartans on their side. The Greeks admired strength and that's what the Spartans had, Strength.

Stories

Something the ancient Greeks loved was stories. They created great myths, fables and stories. For example: "Odysseus and the Terrible Sea" and "Circe." A book by Aesop called "Aesop's Fables," is enjoyed by many people all over the world.

Dance

Dance was a very big part of ancient Greek's life. Their beliefs in dance were that it improved both physical and emotional health. It was not uncommon to see the men dancing with men and the women dancing with women.

"There were more than 200 ancient Greek dances: Comic dances, warlike dances, dances for athletes and religion worship, and dances for weddings, funerals, and celebrations." The instruments used were lyres, flutes, and percussion instruments such as: tambourines, cymbals and castanets.

Food

The soil was not very good to grow things along the coastline. The Greeks overcame this problem by rotating crops and using different methods of watering crops to keep the soil moist. They had goats for milk and cheese, they also grew grapes, figs, wheat, olives and they also had fish, seafood and made homemade wine with the grapes they grew. They also purchased meat in the bigger Greek city-states but it was expensive and not eaten very often. The meat was used mostly used for religious ceremonies.

Clothing

The men and women in ancient Greece would wear different materials for different seasons such as linen to keep them cool in the summer and wool to keep them warm in the winter. To buy cloth and clothes would be very expensive in ancient Greece and they would have to buy the stuff in Agora, the marketplace.

Sometimes when ancient Greeks would make their own clothes. Usually they would dye the material bright colors or just bleach it white. The men never would make the clothes or dye the clothes, that was always done buy the women or female slaves. They did not dye the clothes plain colors like today, they often decorated their clothes to represent their city-states. When a peddler came to the Greek city-states the rich people would often buy from them. The people not so rich might have bought a piece of jewelry perfume. The rich people were often referred to as the people who used perfume made out of boiling flowers and herbs.

The first people to invent the hat were the ancient Greeks.

Hair Styles

Men and Women loved to see people with blonde hair and often tried to bleach their own hair blonde as well. A lot of women loved wearing headbands made of different materials such as metal and ribbon. Men would cut their hair short and have beards. Women had different hair Styles and often had ponytails or braided their long hair in buns on the top of their head. They always enjoyed using hairbrushes and mirrors in ancient Greece. Their hair was always carefully designed, styled or curled.

Families:

Greek Men

When the Greek men entertained their male friends at the popular drinking parties, their wives and daughters were not allowed to attend. In the men's spare time they would often would do horseback riding, wrestling, of course the Olympic games, sailing, watching the work in the fields and hunting in manufacturing or trade. The men also ran all of the government and were away a lot of the time.

Greek Women

The women had limited freedom while out of the house. They were allowed to attend certain funerals, certain weddings and certain celebrations. They were also allowed have over or go to their female friends houses for a limited amount of time. Fortunatley the women were in charge at home!!They got to be the boss of the home they lived in!!

Most homes had Greek slaves to help out around the household and with the work. The male slaves made sure no males came into the home while the husband was away on business and would only let the female neighbors come in. The male slaves also acted as tutors to the young male children although the young female children did not go to school.

Females were also forbidden to watch the Olympic games because the participants wore no clothing.Chariot racing was the only event women could win.Another rule about the Olympics was that the women would only recieve the prize if the owned the horse.

Greek Babies

The babies in ancient Greece were considered youths until the age of 30! When a baby was born in ancient Greece the family would decorate the house and a naked father would carry the baby around the home in a ritual dance. The friends and relatives would send gifts to the household for the baby and the family.

Greek Girls

The Greek girls would have to help their mothers around the household until they got married! They had all the same prioritees as their moms.

Greek Boys

They went to school around 6 or 7 and spent the first seven years of his life helping in the feilds or fishingh and sailing with his father.

Slaves

Salves were considered as working for every family. Slaves were likely not to have families of their own. They worked in stores, factories, mines, ships and families. The police force was said to be made up of slaves. The owner of the slave would give them a different name than the one they were born with and they were forbidden to go to school or join politics. Children slaves were kidnapped, and adults were captured in battle, sold by parents and many other reasons.

Toys and Pets

Toys: Rattles, Little clay animals, Horses on four wheels that you pull on a string, yo-yo's and terra cotta dolls.

Pets: Birds, Dogs, Goats, Mice and Tortoises

Not Popular Pets: Cats

Greek Houses

In the 5th and 6th centuries B.C. it was common that Greek houses were made up of two or three bedrooms. The houses were built with different materials such as clay bricks, wood and bricks of stone. Each family had their own courtyard and although women did not go outside the house they could go inm their own courtyard. The ancient Greeks spent and loved spending time in their courtyard with their family telling fables. The women would often spend the time sewing. The families also ate dinner in their courtyard as well. The ancient Greeks also beleived that a pale complexion was a sign of beauty.

Weddings

Weddings were held after dark. The bride would travel from her home to the groom's home standing in a chariot. The friend's would sing songs to scare the evil spirits away. The bride and groom would get gifts such as baskets, furniture, jewelry, perfume, mirrors and vases filled with Greenery.
