Program Description
This year, our program will take place in person at each designated ALCDSB learning site. The Summer Learning Program will focus on the development of basic literacy and numeracy skills for students in grades 1-2. To promote learner self-efficacy and student voice, there will be an additional focus on developing learner profiles for our students.

Parent(s)/Guardian(s) interested in having their child participate in the program will be asked to ensure prompt drop-off at 9:00 am and pick up at 3:00 pm at each ALCDSB learning site. For all of our programs to have the greatest impact on our students, we would ask that parent(s)/guardian(s) agree to have their child attend for the program's entire duration. If for any reason, parent(s)/guardian(s) decide to withdraw their child from a program, they are asked to inform their child's summer program teacher so that the spot can be designated to another child.

Any technology required for the Summer Learning Program will be available at each site. Your child is not required to have his or her own device.

All programs are subject to enrollment. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Your child will be placed in the current grade that you specify on the survey. Special education resource teachers will be available in the Summer Learning Program to support specialized programs and student needs.

Our program will strive to provide high-quality, engaging literacy and numeracy instruction through the lens of inquiry and Universal Design for Learning to support both the Board and Ministry's initiative in building students' knowledge and skills in mathematics and literacy. We’ll focus on delivering programming that builds on fundamental mathematics concepts and skills, specifically, expectations in the Number strand with the social and emotional mathematical learning expectations incorporated throughout. In Language, our primary program will build on our classroom Science of Reading initiatives and creating more independence in reading and writing for our junior students through the Gradual Release of Responsibility (Modelled, Shared, Guided and Independent Reading). A special focus on learner profiles will be incorporated into the Summer Learning Program to help empower students by fostering student independence, voice, choice and problem-solving. We will be including a recreational/sports and arts component to our program as well to ensure that students have opportunities to participate in active and creative learning opportunities, with some occasional offsite, community field trips.

Class Sizes
All programs are subject to¬ enrollment with a minimum of 15 students. The Summer Learning Program will focus on both literacy and numeracy and incorporate special education resource teachers to support specialized programs. There will be classes offered from Grade SK through to 6.

Program Fee
There is no cost for our Summer Learning Program.

Teacher Communication
We encourage our parent(s)/guardian(s) and students to have open dialogue throughout the program, as needed, to meet students' needs. Your child's teacher will contact you before our program begins on July 11th.

Teachers will provide a Week at a Glance (WAG) which will highlight each week’s events. Upon the conclusion of the program, educators will provide a brief synopsis of the program and some individualized comments for students who were engaged in the program. Educators will provide next steps that can be used to support students.
