February 17, 2017

Students at the Jewish discrimination tableMrs. Carlin-Adam's Grade 8 class at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School has created a history museum right in their classroom. The museum has five exhibits, showcasing groups of people that have experiences discrimination that are part of the Grade 8 curriculum. On February 16 & 17, other classes at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School came to visit the exhibits and the Grade 8 students had the opportunity to share what they had learned about each group. They talked about how each group experienced discrimination through a social justice lens.

Each group of students chose a group in history that has experience discrimination. The five groups included: Aboriginal people, Jewish people during the time of the Holocaust, Chinese people working on the rail road,  Irish people during the potato famine and African Americans.

Each group had a section of the classroom and were to create a bulletin board and table upon which to display their artifacts. Each group of students created various artifacts specific to their group which details the group's experience of discrimination. For each artifact, students wrote an article which detailed the artifact's historical significance. Students teaching younger students about Chinese rail road
