May 13, 2016

Doretta showing off her books and illustrationsOn Friday, May 13, St. Michael Catholic School was excited to welcome author/illustrator Doretta Groenendyk to present to Grade 3-5 students.

St. Michael Catholic School submitted an application as part of the TD Canadian Children's Book Week 2016 to host an author and were pleased to have been selected to participate in the event.

Doretta Groenendyk, from Nova Scotia, has been travelling to schools to share with students her

experience as an author and illustrator of children's books.

Doretta brought many of her illustrations and books that she has written and shared with students the process of coming up with an idea, creating a story board and then seeing her illustrations in print.

Doretta says you don't need fancy things to illustrate, you just need a good idea. She has used magazine clippings, markers, acrylic paintings, photos, pencil and more to inspire her to create her illustrations.

Each student had a clip board with a piece of paper and a pencil and drew along with Doretta as she encouraged students to not " be boring" and says, "if you're going to dream, dream big." She also provided students with many helpful hints of illustrating, to bring their pencil-drawn monsters and superheroes to life.
