Gold Medal-Winning Goalie with the Women's Olympic Hockey Team Sami Jo Small visited Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School to speak to students in two sessions about being the best you can be no matter the situation. Sami Jo spoke to the students about her life growing up and her passion for hockey. As a goalie for the Canadian women's hockey team, Sami Jo has won five World Championships and is a three-time Olympian, who played on two gold medal-winning teams. The night before the "Big Game" in Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, Sami Jo was told she would not be on the ice. At first she was devastated and angry but she told the students how she chose to rise above her feeling and become the team's biggest cheerleader ultimately helping her team become champions. Sami Jo's main message to students was that "you don't always get to choose the role you play but you always get to choose how you play it." She told the students that a "team" needs all of its members regardless of their role if they are to succeed. Sami Jo's talk inspired everyone, staff and students alike.
