Grade 8 & 12 Graduation Update

May 26, 2020

On Tuesday, May 19, 2020 Premier Ford and Minister Lecce announced that students would not be returning to school this June. This decision was made to protect the health and safety of all students, staff and families within our communities.

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board recognizes that this news may be disheartening to many students, staff and families.

In lieu of a physical graduation ceremony, all elementary schools with Grade 8 classes will be hosting graduation ceremonies virtually.

This decision was made as it was felt that this allowed our board to recognize the accomplishments of graduating students while maintaining the health and wellness of students, staff and families as our priority. A virtual graduation allows our board to follow guidelines as outlined by our local public health units and the Ministry of Education.

β€œOn behalf of everyone at the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, I would like to extend my best wishes to all students who are graduating from elementary school," said David DeSantis, Director of Education. β€œI am excited that our board will be recognizing these students through a virtual graduation as this marks a major milestone in your educational career. I know that your years in our Catholic elementary schools have instilled the competencies and skills that have prepared you to enter into secondary school."

ALCDSB elementary schools will be reaching out to Grade 8 students and their families with more details on the virtual graduation ceremony. These ceremonies will go live and be held on the original graduation date.

Grade 12 Update

On Tuesday, May 19, 2020 Premier Ford and Minister Lecce announced that students would not be returning to school this June. This decision was made to protect the health and safety of all students, staff and families within our communities.

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board recognizes that this news may be disheartening to many students, staff and families.

As a result, ALCDSB is committed to recognizing Grade 12 graduates in a different fashion this spring.

Although it may look different at each school, each of our five secondary schools will be celebrating our grade 12 graduates on their accomplishments.

β€œThank you for enriching our Catholic school communities and while we never could have envisioned this as your graduating year, I am so proud of how resilient you are," said David DeSantis, Director of Education.

ALCDSB continues to work in collaboration with our local public health units, the Ministry of Education and local municipalities to ensure that any celebrations held for Grade 12 students will comply with all public health measures. This will ensure the safety of all students, staff and families.

ALCDSB secondary schools are looking at hosting a graduation ceremony in the Fall of 2020. This ceremony will depend on public health requirements. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

β€œOn behalf of everyone at the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, we wish all graduating students all of God's blessings as they pursue their future endeavors. We know that your years in our Catholic education system have instilled the competencies and skills that will prepare you for whichever path you choose in life," said David DeSantis.
