Specialist High Skills Major
SHSM 'Health and Wellness'

In the 2018/2019 school year, the St. Paul community has welcomed a new Specialist High Skills Major in Health and Wellness. Our school community has met this new program with great energy and enthusiasm, providing students with rich learning experiences and opportunities. With many community partners already established, students are able to learn in a very unique way, of the Health and Wellness sector in Quinte West.

SHSM 'Non Profit'

At St. Paul, we have always embodied our title as ' the small school that makes a big difference.’

When we decided to apply for this program we set out with the following goals:

  •  Create pathways to further education and careers as extensions to our social justice work. The reality is that our school does an incredible amount of work that promotes the greater good – students know and appreciate this.
  • The SHSM program says out loud to students … Their work does not need to stop after secondary school.
  • Customize the student experience and reward those students and their hard work in a unique way (with a red seal)
  • Further contextualize the courses they are taking with direct application to the Non Profit world.

In doing all of these, we then open the realm of possibility for students to pursue careers that they are truly passionate about. This is turn helps our local, and global communities.

The fit for this program at St. Paul is completely natural and logical. In speaking with students in the program we have come to see that students are already quite interested in the ‘major’ courses that we offer. Students love helping others – its one of the many things that our school does so well.

In its short existence at St. Paul, we have seen incredible success already, and are very optimistic about the impact it will have on our students and community. In our first year with this program, we had 72% of our SHSM enrolled students receive the 'Red Seal of Completion' on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
