Every Day Counts!

January 21, 2019

Mrs. Ammell visited our intermediate and junior classrooms on Friday January 18th to talk about the importance of attending school every day. Students really enjoyed her discussion and learned how every school day counts! Please see information below. If you have any questions or concerns about your child/ren's attendance, please do not hesitate to speak with your child/ren's classroom teacher or contact the office.

Did you know? Research shows that higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Why is regular attendance at school important? Regular school attendance will mean that your child has a better chance in life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day.

• they learn better

• they make friends

• they are happier

• they have a brighter future.

Children of school age are enrolled and attend school all day, every school day. Reasons for absence include: illness, participating in a school event, doctor or dentist appointment that could not be scheduled outside school hours, and so on. Being away from school for events that could be scheduled for another time (e.g. shopping, if they sleep in, hair cuts) impacts attendance and sends an unintentional message about the importance of school. Whenever possible, routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to schedule vacations outside school time. If your family vacation is during school time, let the school know in advance and talk about what arrangements can be made for your child. We are required to complete a form describing the reason for absence and to provide your child with work to complete during the time they will be away. Documentation is then placed in your child/ren's Ontario Student Record.

As part of safe schools protocol, if your child is absent from school, you need to let the school know.  If you are having problems getting your child to school because they:

• won’t get out of bed in the morning

• won’t go to bed at night

• can’t find their books, school bag …

• are slow to eat breakfast

• haven’t done their homework

• are watching TV or engaged in a preferred activity

• have a test or presentation to do, have an assignment to hand in

• want to stay home on their birthday

setting up a routine can help you and your child/ren be more successful in attending school all day and every day.

Parents/guardians can:

• have a set time to go to bed

• have a set time to get out of bed

• have school bag and other items (e.g. outfit for the next day, lunch bag) ready the night before

• have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast

• set a time for daily homework activities

• speak about school positively

• be firm, send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term!

What should you do if your child/ren won’t go to school? You should contact the school as soon as possible for advice and support. As our Attendance Counsellor, Mrs. Ammell will work with you, your child/ren and the school to support your child/ren in their education. Your child/ren's education and future is built all day, every day at school!
