The Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) Program is a program available to all senior students at Holy Cross that want to seriously be part of an exciting and growing industry in the field of communications technology. Students enrolled in the SHSM program will not only be involved In witnessing today's rapid changes in technology they will also be offered the opportunity to help pave the way for new and emerging media and technological formats for years to come. Since employment is increasing in the area of media applications SHSM is the perfect choice for students interesting in this career sector.
The Specialist High Skill Major program is for any senior that has:
A creative and imaginative mind;
An interest in audio & visual art;
An appreciation of media production equipment;
Good communication skills in both the oral and written word;
The ability to work with other people;
A critical eye for detail.
Students interested in pursuing a career as an animator, audio engineer, game designer, graphic designer, journalist, photographer, video producer or web designer should take advantage of this opportunity!
The features of SHSM:
The SHSM program will focus on capturing, transmitting and displaying audio/video/graphic and image information using a range of communication systems including cable, broadcasting, print, web, and other program distribution systems.
Utilizing leading edge technology such as: high definition video camcorders, video switchers and teleprompters, cablecast, broadcast, podcast, stream,and televise and exhibit their media productions.
Students produce P.S.A television commercials for community viewing.
SHSM students travel to Chicago, Hollywood, Montreal, New York, and/or Toronto to witness working professionals in the media production industry.
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board's Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs will suit students pursuing all pathway destinations (apprenticeship, college, university or the workplace) who want to explore and refine their career goals and make informed choices about their next steps after secondary school.
Through a combination of sector related courses, certifications, career exploration opportunities and on-the-job co-op experiences, students are able to develop essential work habits and skills and acquire specialized knowledge in their field of interest. The programs allow students to focus on career paths that match their interests while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
