Dance
Holy Cross has a new and thriving dance program. There are many opportunities for students to explore dance for the first time, or polish previously developed skills.

Students can choose to take the dance course, which is currently offered for all HC students. The grade 10 course allows students to develop their dance skills and learn the theoretical basis of a variety of dance genres. These genres include, hip hop, ballet, jazz, musical theatre, and modern dance. Student learning will include creating dance sequences, revising and refining choreography, public performances and exploration of injury prevention. Students set personal goals with regard to flexibility and choreography. The grade 11 course extends past the basic dance technique, and allows students to expand on the historical background of each genre. Students will also perform in assemblies throughout the school year, including Pep Rally, Remembrance Day and Stations of the Cross.

Dance at Holy Cross promotes an open atmosphere and respects the unique process and level of each student. Each unit, activity and resource is intended to provide students with many expressive outlets to help them reach their full potential as members of the Catholic faith community.

Other Opportunities in Dance at Holy Cross

Dance Team and Dance Club:

Students who wish to try out for the HC Dance Team will travel to Toronto to compete at STRIVE; A competition created for High School and Community Centre participants. In 2016, the large group performance took home Diamond with a score 95.15% from the judges in their age category. This performance went on to win fourth best large group performance of the entire day!

The small group performance, which was also performed at our Holy Thursday liturgy, earned Diamond with a score of 95.98% in their category. This is an incredible achievement that went on to win first place overall out of all small groups.

Auditions are held in February for students from grades 9-12.

The dance club is open to all levels and grades at Holy Cross. We hold open hip-hop, contemporary and/or jazz classes once a week in the cafeteria and put together an energetic routine for the Spring Cabaret: Our annual HC talent show. This opportunity begins second semester and is a great way to get involved in the Arts at Holy Cross!

Annual Musical:

This year (2018) Holy Cross dancers auditioned to form the dance ensemble for the musical "Newsies". The show was an incredible opportunity for dancers to focus on the performance elements involved in dance, and experience the thrill of live theatre!  Stay tuned for the announcement of next year's musical!
