Current Holy Cross sports updates:

Sept 25 / 2021

Please read the message below as it contains to our spectator policy for the fall KASSAA sport season:

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) recognizes the important role that extra-curricular sport activities play in the lives of students. The board has worked closely with its partners at KFL&A Public Health (KFLAPH) and Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) to develop plans and protocols to help ensure a safe return-to-sport for everyone.

The board is pleased to announce that ALCDSB secondary school fall athletic teams will return to competition beginning on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021 while following protocols to reduce the potential exposure to COVID-19. This currently includes golf, field hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, and rugby. Players, volunteer staff coaches and officials must follow safety protocols including daily COVID-19 screening. Some safety protocols are specific to each sport. Players will be provided with this information and will include actions before, during and after play. Failure to adhere to the protocols could result in removal from a game and/or the season. Additional measures could be introduced by the board or public health depending on local circumstances and data.

We know that families enjoy attending sports games and events to support and cheer on their students. At this time, however, spectators are NOT permitted at any indoor event whether it is inside a ALCDSB school, Limestone DSB school, Hastings-Prince Edward DSB school or other facility.  We are also asking that spectators consider not attending outdoor events either. We know it is tempting to attend outdoor activities which are generally much safer than those held indoors, however, we are taking every step we can to ensure a safe space for student athletes. This includes limiting spectators to ensure student-athletes have as few contacts as possible and to assist with accurate contact tracing should a positive case occur. We would hate to see the fall season jeopardized when student athletes and coaches are so excited to return to play.

If families must attend outdoor events (to pick up students), we ask that you remain in your vehicles. If you must exit your vehicle, please ensure you are masked, and that you do not congregate and maintain a safe two-metre distance from other student-athletes and staff.

We appreciate your ongoing patience and understanding. By working together, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for student-athletes. We hope these measures will be short-lived and that we can return to a more typical sport experience as soon as possible.

RETURN TO TRAIN PLAN

Secondary School Return to Athletics Training

Information for Student-Athlete and Staff/Coach Safety at ALCDSB

September 2021

The guidance provided below is subject to change depending on evolving public health circumstances and updates from our local public health units.

Inter-School Athletics:

  • Inter-school athletics will resume in accordance with direction from the Ministry of Education and guidance from local Public Health Units.
  • Secondary schools can return to training for fall sports as this program has been approved by the KFLA and HPE Health Units.
  • Coaches and student-athletes can begin practices in the first week of school (Sept 7-11).

ALCDSB Fall Sports are (subject to availability) as follows:

Following public health guidance, masks will be required for high contact sports indoors (masks not required for high or low contact sports outdoors, and masks are not required, but strongly encouraged for low contact sports indoors).

  • Football (Outdoors)
  • Cross Country (Outdoors)
  • Girls Field Hockey (Outdoors)
  • Golf (Outdoors)
  • Boys Volleyball (Indoor) Masks strongly encouraged.
  • Girls Basketball (Indoor – high contact) Masks required.

Spectators or visitors will not be allowed to attend tryouts/practices.  Only coaches and student athletes can attend.  Whether games/events can have spectators once seasons begin is still to be determined in consultation with our local public health units.

Coaches and athletes must wear masks and use distance in change rooms, equipment rooms, school hallways and washrooms, during team meetings, modelling of skill, sitting on the bench/sidelines, when watching other teammates scrimmage.  Masks may be removed for safe participation in certain sports. There is to be no congregating or gathering prior to, during or after tryouts or practices.

The risk associated with transmission with shared objects is low for indoor physical education equipment and shared outdoor equipment.  High touch surface areas like Fitness Centre equipment and benches should continue to be cleaned as normal.  The focus should be on regular hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette to reduce the risk of infection related to shared equipment, particularly when regular cleaning of shared objects is not feasible.

Student-Athletes:

  • Attendance will be taken at each meeting/practice/tryout/game.
  • Must complete the COVID-19 self screening daily and before practice and games.
  • Have their own clearly labelled water bottle for personal use only.
  • Follow direction and guidance provided by coaching staff regarding physical distancing, respiratory etiquette, hand hygiene, safe use of a non-medical/cloth mask, staying home when feeling ill, and monitoring symptoms.
