Season Highlights

All members of the golf team showed exceptional work ethic in the months leading up to the 2019 high school season. The boys squad came fourth at OFSAA the previous year narrowly missing out on a medal and with the older members of the team off to pursue post-secondary athletics it was up to the younger players to fill their shoes. The season began at Camden Braes Golf Club where Crusaders were divided up into two teams and participated in a scramble format. (Best Ball). Despite HC’s two teams going up against the other school's one team both Crusader teams placed 1st and 2nd respectively. Team 1 lead by Jarred Gibbons and team 2 lead by Aidan Proderick combined for a 17 under par showing!  A week later Loyalist Golf and Country Club hosted the KASSAA Championship. The men's team comprised of Conor Gaudet, Ashton McCulloch, Rowan Pearson-Clark and Jarred Gibbons. The team did not disappoint, winning easily lead by Ashton’s effortless 69 followed up by a few other solid scores by the remainder of the team. The team won their third consecutive KASSAA title and advanced to the eastern Ontario final. Ian Watts and Aidan Proderick also competed as individuals. At EOSSAA the team struggled, missing Ashton who was competing in British Columbia, Conor, Rowan, Jarred and Quinton were  exposed by the difficult Perth conditions. Conor posted an uncharacteristic 82 and commented on his round “it was very disappointing, to not execute in tough conditions is frustrating especially when I felt confident coming to the club this morning”. In the girl's division Paige Gazely (grade nine) and Paige Douglas (grade 10) debuted at Loyalist with impressive performances. Douglas advanced to EOSSAA with a 87 on the difficult Loyalist track. With an OFSAA qualifier on the line, Douglas played her best golf, remaining composed throughout her whole round and shot a very solid 93. To cap off the Crusader season Paige traveled to Dorchester Ontario. Paige commented on her trip I thought OFSAA was a great experience to meet new people and improve my game as well as having fun” All in all the Holy Cross 2019 golf season was a success. Once again Holy Cross was able to show all of its talented golfers at the district, region and provincial level. Big thanks to Mr. Watts for putting so much time and effort to help make every golfer the best that they can be

Kyle Benford has spent most of his summer working on his golf game away from the tournament spotlight -- and just plain working to save money for university.  The Amherstview golfer, 18, remains tournament tough, as evidenced by his impressive victory at the 70th Whig-Standard Eastern Ontario Championship. He shot one-under-par 139 over 36 holes at the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club on Saturday.  Despite a double bogey on his final hole of the first round, Simon Reyers is in the hunt at the Ontario men's amateur golf championship.  The Kingston native shot even par 71 on Tuesday at the Brampton Golf Club, putting Reyers in sole possession of seventh place at the 156-player, 72-hole event.   At the Titans Invitational hosted by his university,Simon Reyers placed a season-best fifth, helping Detroit Mercy capture the team title at the seven-school event.

Kyle Benford, 18, who made a verbal commitment to play U. S. collegiate golf at the University of Detroit Mercy beginning fall 2011,  swung into a new experience after he finished his final semester at Holy Cross Secondary.  Benford is headed overseas to be a caddy for Kingston's Matt McQuillan, who was qualifying for the European Tour.  Brad Boyle and Kyle Benford hope their knowledge of the subtleties of the greens of Cataraqui Golf and Country Club will give them the home-course edge at the Ontario Junior Boys Match Play Championship.  Both of the Cataraqui juniors are seeded in the top third of the 64-golfer field -- Boyle is No. 3 and Benford No. 11. The comfort of playing on their home course is a big factor in their confident approach to playing at one of the big three junior events on the provincial competitive calendar.
