Grade 7 student wins provincial essay contest

St. Michael Catholic School
January 25, 2017

St.Michael student winner.JPGCongratulations to St. Michael Catholic School Grade 7 student, Jada, her for winning submission to the Grocery Foundation Agents of Change Gala Contest.

The Grocery Foundation is a non-profit foundation that helps to ensure children and youth in Ontario have access to proper nutrition while at school. This foundation is connected to Food for Learning Foundation, the local foundation that provides food to over 10,000 local children each school year in the Belleville region.

Below is Jada's winning essay for the Grocery Foundation Gala Essay:

Beating Hunger can Start at School

I am waiting for the bus to come pick me up, hungry again. Sitting alone, my stomach grumbling, hoping no one will hear.  Going through my head to make sure all my homework is finished but all I can think about is food.  At school, I act like everyone else, not letting anyone know.  It's just another day, I'll get through it, if only we had food. Nobody knows, nobody will know, my parents just don't make enough money. Being hungry at school can affect you doing your best on a test because it takes your mind off focusing on trying and more about your hunger. Having a nutrition program in school will help by keeping your body healthy, active and prevent you from being hungry.  The brain needs food to focus. Some children don't have time to eat, or they're too poor and don't have enough food at their homes. A nutrition program will make sure they get the nutrients they need to be healthy. Let's help feed all children. ~Hunger can be silent when no one is listening.
